I decided I'm not going to bother with it. Dealers suck, and I would have to trailer the car to a dealer. Screw that. No way I'm going to lose 3 bars by 2017 anyway.
Its not just the capacity warranty that requires the annual "test".
Also needed for the 8 year 100,000 mile warranty.

+1 on the annual battery check; luckily for the Chicagoland area we have more than just a single Nissan dealer to shop around for how much this might cost after the 'free' ones (I squeezed 3 annual ones with the last one being done a day before the 3 years was up); I would think it should only be an hour labor charge at most but some shops see this 'easy' work as a nice money maker as they don't do much on LEAF's for maintenance as it is.

I was in the dealer getting the airbag software recall done for our '16 Rogue and decided to inquire when our '12 Leaf (that we purchased at the same time back in April '16) when the annual battery check needs to be done since the car is a CPO and I want to make sure the warranty is kept good. He checked the service records and told me it will be due in Dec. at a cost of $60. I would rather pay the $60 to keep the warranty up than have the battery develop a problem that could have been covered but I dropped the ball on the checks. I'm already down 2 capacity bars but don't expect it to drop 2 more for a free battery replacement in the time left. Just hope it will last until my model 3 reservation comes up. I'd really like it to last past the 5 years of loan payments but don't seem realistic from the many post on here about battery capacity loss.

Since this check probably does not serve any real purpose, wonder if there are any 3rd party companies selling warranty for Leaf? Given that Leaf requires very little maintenance in general it might even be cheaper.

I did not have all of the battery checks and was told by a battery specialist with Nissan that the tests were basically made to make the customer feel better. They gave my cars replacement batteries without having all of the annual checkups.

The free replacement batteries are only good for one year warranty anyway. So if you think your car 11-12 is going to make it to free replacement than I would say no. But, if you think you will not make free replacement, you may be able to claim in the end, a battery defect and Nissan has been known to ask for proof of all of the battery checks in that instance.

I have no idea how they are going to handle 2013 and newer cars that were not a part of the lawsuit requiring new battery replacement instead of repair to minimum of 9 bars. Maybe they will handle all of them the same without having a lawsuit.

More likely they are a sop to the dealerships. Nissan reimburses them, and they can then charge for these checks after two years.

We know that one is a given...

Are you sure about that :?:
I recognize that my capacity warranty new battery is only warranted for one year on capacity because it was replaced past five year mark.
But original battery was warranted also for defects for 8 years 100,000 miles.
I think that warranty continues till 8 years from my in service date or 100,000 miles whichever comes first.
