    Official VW e-Golf thread - $29,815

7500. The best SEL deal I found has a total cost (drive-off + monthlies + lease return) just north of $11K. My LE is under $9600. The Santa Monica quote has the total cost over $12K (rough calculation). All of these numbers are before the $2500 CA rebate. Keep in mind, drive-off is not down...

    Official VW e-Golf thread - $29,815

I have a 2013 Leaf S w/ quick charger. Just leased a egolf LE for 2500 drive-off and 192/m including tax. I was considering 500e, which would have saved me $500 over the 36-month lease. However, egolf is a much more useful car, with real back seats. Egolf drives better than Leaf, and is well...

I read somewhere there are 8000 preorders, all outside US. US residents will be able to preorder soon

    Official BMW i3 thread

On "Adult", "Child" and "Pedestrian", i3 is only marginally lower than Leaf. However, for "Safety Assist", it is significantly lower. I think it lost points in the "Safety Assist" category for lacking of "Speed Assistance System" and no warning for rear seat belt. However, I am not aware that...

    Official BMW i3 thread

Again, I am speaking from real experience with Element. Both doors open. Get out of the car and move to the front. Close the back door. Move out. Close the front door. The worst case, flip the front seat forward and let the kid out of the front door with the back door closed. If the space is...

    Official BMW i3 thread

Not really. Again, speaking from my experience with Element, it is extremely easy to unbutton the kid from the child seat without the B pillar in the way. Essentially you are operating from the 45 degree front instead of the side. On the other hand, we had to switch when the kid is older and...

    Official BMW i3 thread

I had an Honda Element with the same type of doors. Yes, in tight parking space, it sucked. However, for 99% of the usage, there is no question in my mind that the"suicide" door is better. It's easier to get in and out for the back seat passengers. It's easier to load stuff. It's easier to...

USB port on Leaf cannot be used to charge device

iPhone and iPad will charge, slowly. A lot of Android devices requires 2amp to charge.

    Bluetooth the Culprit?

Why don't you turn off the BT on the phones and check the current again?

Where is the EV industry headed in the next 5 years ?

As I said, EV are great commuter cars, as the second car in a multi-car family. Smart has limited appeal, but 2+2 ones like 500e and i3 will have more appeal than Leaf, targeting specifically as commuter car. To be a successful family primary car, it needs to be bigger and have longer range...

Where is the EV industry headed in the next 5 years ?

Fiat 500e is a better car than regular 500. Smart ED is a better car than ICE Smart fortwo

Where is the EV industry headed in the next 5 years ?

I disagree that the battery needs to be bigger. Yes, 1% to 5% of the trips cannot be covered by Leaf. However, many households have 2+ cars. There is absolutely no reason that one of them cannot be an EV for workday commute. Actually, I think there is a trend toward smaller 2/4 seats commuter...

    Roof rack ???

You can get old style square bars for cheap on craigslist, about $50. The traverse feet are about 120 on eBay Fit kit is 90 (?) from thule. So, $300 is enough to get a basic system. A lot of racks are available for the square bar on craigslist for cheap.

So I have two different routes to work.....

Same distance, same time, same average speed. However, if your speed is constant, it wastes less energy. A constant 40mpg is better than half time at 50 and half at 30

Have a Leaf as your only vehicle?

Zip car is much easier than car rental. Pick-up is instant, you can rental by hour, and gas/insurance is included. You can pick up at Berkeley, then drive to HMB. Five hour would cost you 40$. With a one-day rental, the daily rate may be cheaper at $30, but probably use 4 gallon of gas at $16...

Have a Leaf as your only vehicle?

Doable if you have a zipcar around. The money you save is more than enough to pay for occasional zipcar rentals.

    S vs. SV

I had the same consideration as OP when I got my Leaf. The only must-have was QuickCharge (which I used several times after I bought it, so that proved it is useful) and rear-view camera. With those options priced, the SV was $5K over S, and SL was only $1K over SV. So it was really a decision...

    Another Consideration for Battery Life??

I don't think TMS would make any difference as your battery will still sitting at 85F during the day when parked.

carbon footprint building a leaf vs IC car

Yes, read that thread by all means. It uses 5kwh to 7kwh of energy to refine a gallon of gas. Now, not all of that energy is from electricity. Natural gas is used and a lot comes from by-product during the process. However, that process creates carbon footprint just the same. It is no...

carbon footprint building a leaf vs IC car

Even this study did not count the electricity needed to refine gasoline. It takes about 5kw to refine one gallon of gas. So the energy used to refine one gallon of gas is enough to power my Leaf for 20 miles. And few pure ICE car can even get 20mpg in city driving. To get above 20mpg in city...
