NissanConnect EV / Telematics Hardware Update, for the post-2G world

The FAQ says the replacement modem will be 3G only (not LTE) so it'll need to be replaced again, probably in around 5 years (ATT hasn't announced when it will turn off 3G, but it probably won't be that much longer than Verizon which announced they will be turning off 3G in 2021)... and I doubt...

    12V Battery problems

After several days of driving the car, my wife says she went back through the charging timers and it successfully set/saved/enabled the timers again, so it's back to normal [everyday early adopter pains].

    12V Battery problems

My 12v battery died today (4.5 years old) but in the worst way, there was power but the car acted possessed. The car wouldn't startup fully, I got a dashboard with no readings for battery charge level, temperature, etc. and --- for miles remaining. I couldn't release the parking brake or take...

    Headlights

The only thing wrong with the headlights is you have to run the high beams for a few minutes to defrost them in winter. :D

Climate Control Solution - Gain Control of your Heater!

I put mine in this last week and it's been great in the sunny and warm (not hot) weather. It even works better than the fan in an ICE vehicle because there is no hot engine to make the intake air luke warm when the temperature control is turned all the way down/off, so I'm not only going to use...

411 on volontary recall P1273 LEAF VCM LBC TCU NTB12-014

I believe this is "power mode". It kicks in when the accelerator depression is very quick (even if not pressed down all the way). The ramping of power is the same thing that happens in the Leaf if you flatten the accelerator (it hits full power around 25MPH). After 10 or so seconds or if you...

unintended consequences - frost on headlights

A side effect of cold LED headlights, they don't defrost themselves. Having a layer of frost makes them really ineffective and they are hard to scrape with a plastic ice scraper because of their shape. I tried to keep running the high beams last night to warm them up and they eventually melted...

    Wireless connection

I call BS. Mine works fine with DHCP, the device info page always shows connected, I can always connect to it via web browser, the network test page just fails most of the time. I am connected remotely via web browser and went into the garage and did a network test and it failed, so the...

    Wireless connection

I just switched to a wired connection and the network test fails 9 out of 10 times, way more than with wifi. Maybe the network test is buggy. Edit: The "device info" page shows the network is connected and that the Blink has an IP address, and my router shows the IP and mac address, so I do...

I have asked my Blink EVSE to be removed

I've had 3 refusal to charge incidents now and only a power cycle of the unit would fix it (not even the daily 10am soft reboot fixes it). The support guy is blaming intermittent wifi. If that really is the cause, that means their soft reboots aren't a functioning workaround to the wifi issue...

Leaf down pothole takes out front & rear drivers side tires

These would be very useful (even better would be slot car side wheels so you could use curbs to steer ), as would spring-loaded steel bumpers, and those poles they mount on the front/rear corners of cars in Japan so you can see where the corners are on these curvy car bodies. Of course...

Parking Brake auto-release only works when seat belts buckle

I usually never use the auto-release, but noticed today when pulling out of garage that it only works when your seat belt is buckled. It may be blocked with any dash warnings, but the seat belt was the only one I had to play with.

Leaf down pothole takes out front & rear drivers side tires

I barely brushed a curb and gashed the sidewall pretty deeply. I replaced the tires with Goodyear triple treads and have had several light curb brushes with no more than surface scuffs. I gained some tire noise but didn't lose any noticeable range and the tires handle better and seem more durable.

    Steering wheel mounted drive selector

You don't need neutral unless your right foot is spastic or numb. You coast by keeping your foot on the accelerator in a neutral position (not accelerating, not decelerating, power meter in dead-center). The power meter in dead-center proves you're not using energy by keeping your foot on the...

    Overhead of main drive inverter

LOL TEG! It seems the pumps aren't thermostatically controlled then since they run in park with everything cold... wasteful but cheaper design, and doesn't eat into the range much (kind of like the remaining incandescent lights).

    Overhead of main drive inverter

I'm not sure if the humming is the inverter, cooling pump, or fan, but something is humming under the hood when in park (climate control off). Anyway, thanks for the tip, I didn't think to look through the console displays (I never look in there for every-day use, so out of sight out of mind :) ).

    Overhead of main drive inverter

Anybody know what the overhead energy usage of the main drive inverter is? I mean if I turn the car on (drive mode, not accessory mode) and let it sit in park with the inverter humming along, how long will the battery last?

    Burn out?!

This is all in your head (not calling you a liar, but you are probably imagining it's faster). I tried a neutral drop with the accelerator pedal to the floor tonight and it does not jump off the line any harder than just stomping it in D and still doesn't hit full power until >20mph.

    Burn out?!

After talking with an EV expert, the power limitation might by a physical limitation. At 0 rpm, to get full power you need massive amperage, which requires a serious inverter. Nissan might limit the power so they can keep the inverter cost down, and most Leaf buyers won't care because it's not...

What SOC% does each bar on Leaf dash represent ?

Exactly, you debate it. I'm not saying you're absolutely wrong, but there are multiple pieces of evidence (anecdotal and factual) that lead me to believe usable capacity is 24kWh. I don't have a citation, I just remember reading months ago a comparison of the Volt vs Leaf and how the Volt...
