Simple formula to calculate "fuel" savings (miles required)

I'm in a weird middle. I go anywhere from 30MPG in my ICE car, and 25-50MPG on my motorcycles. I get about 5.0mi/kWh in the Leaf (probably closer to 4.6 if talking about grid power). Each has its own uses. Using 4.6… 10k miles costs about $220 Car, about 1150, depending on gas prices M1 is...

    Unplug Level 1 Charger?

I've found both the L1 (OEM) and L2 (CC LCS-20) both use about 2W of power. When the car is connected and not charging, it's about 5W. I only measured 1 line of the L2 EVSE, as I didn't have an easy way to measure both legs. This means the L2 EVSE could use 4W idle, and 10W power. Another...

    2015 PreHeat Issue

I believe this is the feature called "we would rather freeze you than allow you to control the temperature" Drives (ha!) me nuts. Seat warmers do the same. Even if it's 40° out, it cowardly refuses to keep the heat on, forcing a choice between freeze, or use cabin heat.

kWh vs kW and why it's important

    My EV's green. *grin*

kWh vs kW and why it's important

Only because nobody has said it yet (in this thread)… kWh = gallons of gasoline kW = horsepower And yes, they are directly compatible. Kilowatt-hours is a measure of energy. Energy is joules. A gallon of gasoline contains a specific amount of energy. Kilowatts is a measure of power. 0.746 kW...

Mini battery range extender (adding more batteries)

If you're looking to increase range by changing the 12v system, you're likely to be thoroughly disappointed. The single largest drain on the 12v system is the headlights. Driving from 100-0% with headlights on or off will make <1mi difference (at any reasonable speed…). As others have said, the...

Guinness World Record for Largest Parade of EV's on 9/20

Sounds fun. Count me in :D Might be a good time to see if there are any other custom-colored Leafs.

Bar loss when parked on roadtrip

I usually charge to 100% every other week or so. Usually on accident… I typically charge to about 90-95%, just because the last ~5% and balance cycle take over an hour. That time could easily give another driver 20-30mi of range, where I'd only get… 5?

Battery heater drain in COLD weather question

Indeed. The battery heater only operates to keep the packs above freezing. The 300W is probably also it's peak rating, not it's continuous rating. 300W of heat is… a lot. About 1000 BTU per hour, or, enough to hold 72° for about 10x10 area. If 10% is your cutoff, you're actually losing more...

Nissan Leaf EVSE upgrade - Reviews? Reliable?

NEC says #12 can carry 25A. However, in most cases it's limited to 20A. At 90°, it's capable of 30A. Most wires aren't rated for this temp, and usually are limited to 60°. There are other components in the EVSE as well. Perhaps the contactors/relays are not rated for switching 25A, or doing so...

    ClipperCreek HCS-40P #6 or #8 wire?

The price difference between #6 and #8 is trivial compared to replacing the entire line with #6 if you decide to upgrade to a 50A circuit. I generally overprovision things like this. Most of the time, I don't end up needing it. However, voltage drop is also a concern. You might have a short...

One of the range bars only has 1-2 miles on it

I noticed this the other day. I went from 8 bars to 6 bars in about 2 miles of driving. First time it's done that. I was around 45 miles driven from ~95%.

    Transmission coupling

The Leaf technically can't be put into neutral. It's fixed into gear, and this is the primary reason the drive wheels must be off the ground when towing. I doubt that argument would hold up in court, but if you hired a reasonable lawyer, I'm sure you could get away with it. That said, I've never...

Nissan Leaf EVSE upgrade - Reviews? Reliable?

The EVSE upgrade will only provide 4.8kW to the charger. This will provide around 4.3kW to the batteries. For full 6.0kW charge rate, you need a 40A circuit.

Just turned over 20,000 miles today in my 2013 S

20k miles, you're almost certainly down more than 5 percent. I've got 3k miles, and it's at 7%. The first 10% usually goes fairly fast, then it slows down.

    Crazy Dream

OK, some of you might call it a nightmare, but… it was pretty crazy. I have a Leaf, I love my Leaf. It's green. So last night, I went to bed, and had a dream about my Leaf. I was at a restaurant, eating dinner with my friends. Dinner ended, and it was time to go home. I was taking my friend...

    MY 2013 Speedometer reading incorrect!

True, which is why I said a 12-channel, not a 50 or 60 channel. Generally, the more channels the receiver has, the faster your cold-start time. My estimation was based somewhat on the Copernicus II GPS module. Actually, the time accuracy is at best 14ns. Still pretty damn good. I like 30, lets...

    MY 2013 Speedometer reading incorrect!

But you can use it to get an extremely accurate speed. In fact, with a 12-channel receiver, you can get around 10-foot accuracy. As GPS is already accurate to the nanosecond, at 60MPH, your margin of error is less than .1%. For comparison, a perfectly accurate speedometer will have a margin of...

    MY 2013 Speedometer reading incorrect!

This run is too short for your precision. Here's why: your margin of error is 0.1 mi. Adding the error to the distance, and subtracting it from the indicated gives you the same value. Try a longer route, as a higher precision might be difficult. A 1% error is half the difference, which will be...
