Quite a few folks (raises hand) post images on Imgur due to limitations of free accounts.

Recently, techmeme had this headline.

https://www.techmeme.com/230420/p14#a230420p14
"Mariella Moon / Engadget:

Imgur plans to delete “old, unused, and inactive content” that's not tied to a user account, starting on May 15, potentially erasing years of internet history — For years, Imgur has made sharing photos and GIFs on the internet as easy as uploading a file — you don't even need an account to use it."

It links to https://www.engadget.com/imgur-to-ban-explicit-images-and-delete-uploads-not-tied-to-an-account-122537118.html "Imgur to ban explicit images and delete uploads not tied to an account
The changes in its Terms of Service will take effect on May 15th."

There's been other press coverage at https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/04/hosting-site-imgur-will-remove-explicit-and-anonymous-content-next-month/.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

All of the forums I have used for other vehicles have the provision to directly upload images to the site. I know that means storage. But losing photos would be a big deal. What would be needed to get this capability for this site?

AFAIK, you need to be a gold member: https://www.mynissanleaf.com/payments.php. I agree that it's a weird one. Most/all other web forums I'm on like this don't require paid membership to upload images directly.

I was a gold member at some points when I still had a Leaf, but I sold my former used Leaf in mid-2021.

It is a function of storage space and the rise in costs with it. While the cost is minimal, it is still a cost.

Plus if any account can post images, then that means spammers will be able to upload and post images as well, so that increases the moderation need.

The Imgur solution is simple - make an account. I've had one all along, for this very reason.

At the current volume of spam, images would be only a minor moderation nuisance. If it jumped, however, as it sometimes does, it could be a problem.

I never used an account because it was so easy just to upload and get a link. It would take a while go back through old post to re-upload images under my account and edit all the post to point to it. I sure hope imgur has a better way to do this transfer process before the deadline. :?

When I have the free time to kill :( , I copy the images to my "imgur" account now and re-link my post with an edit. The process is quick but the task is very tedious. I wish imgur would come up with a way to just "take" ownership of an image and put it in your account without messing with the link but I suppose that would be too easy to abuse if anyone could claim any anonymous image that was posted.
