Unfortunately, it seems that if I simply post the picture to my own ISP-hosted web space, I can link to it, but I can't embed it. (See my post at viewtopic.php?f=27&t=31980)

I see your embedded picture just fine in that post.
(and I see the link to it after the picture)

Note to Flickr users. Use the embed, copy the link, paste on the page, find the part that starts with "https://live.staticflickr.com" and ends with ".jpg" and copy/cut that, paste that on a blank line and add [ IMG] before the https and [ /IMG] after the .jpg NOTE: remove space after left bracket [. I had to add it to keep it from going into image mode.

Upload the image to a image hosting site like Imgur. They will offer options to create links. Then paste the link url you have copied from the image site into a post here, highlight it, select "Img" from the posting options, and if the gods are smiling upon you, the image will appear here.

PLEASE don't PM me with Leaf questions. Just post in the topic that seems most appropriate.
I use my Google drive to store the jpeg, and reference it in a post with the <img> tags.
Not a big deal, just a bit clunky. And I do tend to resize the jpeg first.

Being able to attach a small image was invented in the late 90’s and is a common function on all other forums.
The other thing is that forcing people to use external images means that in a few years time 50% or more of the images will not be visible. For many posts, this doesn't matter much. But some users put a lot of effort into their posts, and with these often the images are invaluable.
But, I don't pay for the server, so I can't complain.

What's the best way to attach images to the forum at this point?
Two choices:
1. Become a paid forum supporter and upload images directly to the forum when you make a post.
2. Upload to a hosting site (e.g., imgur.com) and follow the instructions in the first post of this thread.
The owner of the forum long ago decided that option 1 is a premium level service.
