Yes, the 16 amp EVSE will be fine on a 20 amp circuit and does charge faster than the OEM which will only deliver 12 amps.

I'm using an EVSE rated at 16 amps 120V, or 16 amps 240V depending on whether the plug adaptor is attached or not. Service to my garage is 30 amps max, so I cannot use the OEM charger at 240V.

This is the EVSE: https://www.amazon.ca/Morec-NEMA6-20P-Portable-220V-240V-Compatible/dp/B07Q5RD5TL?th=1

2018 SL with 40 kWh pack:

Using 16 amps@120V, the aftermarket EVSE adds 5% per hour to the pack.

Using 16 amps@240V, the aftermarket EVSE adds 10% per hour to the pack.

OEM at 120V, is 12 amps and adds 3.5% per hour to the pack. I only use that at camp where the power is 15 amp@120V max. The LEAF dash does not have that charge rate (1.92 kW) as on option, but 10% per hour is pretty easy to deal with when targeting 80%.
