FCA goes big on little Fiat 500 EV, plans to build 80,000
$787 million investment is FCA's biggest leap into a battery electric car

Fiat to pump almost $800M into next-generation 500e electric car
This new one shouldn't be a massive loss leader, like the last one.

I don't suppose they will spend any of that money on making the car's appearance attractive...
LOL! I actually find the current Fiat 500 and 500e to be on the more attractive side, if not cute. I characterized as decent at https://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=19842&p=558761#p558761.

IMHO, it's styled a lot better than at least gen 1 Leaf...

You did see the ugly earlier gen https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiat_Multipla, right? ;) Also Google for 1998 fiat multipla interior.

At least the Multipla has the excuse of being roomy and space efficient. The headlights were clearly provided free of charge by the supplier, though. The 500e looks to me like the larval form of the Gen I Leaf...

I don't remember details but FCA bought a couple Billion dollars of EV credits from Tesla not too long ago to avoid EU fines. FCA would obviously like to have a compliance car that plugs their cash drain.

I wonder if the CEO will ask people not to buy them again. Wouldn’t it save money just to not build them.
Well, it'd have to be their current CEO. Sergio Marchionne who did that before several times passed away almost a year ago.

I thought i would give an update on our used 2013 Fiat 500e experience. We bought ours 3 years ago from a used car dealer for $7,300 out the door and have added 48K miles to the car. It's great as a local errand car and can do up to a 55 mile commute at freeway speeds. My wife would drive up in traffic with 20-30% battery remaining and charge at her office garage. The drive home would be late in the evening and she'd return with about 9% remaining because she would average 73mph.

We've since bought a used Tesla Model S 85 in order to get a valid solo-HOV access sticker, and my wife no longer needs to recharge at the office garage. The 249 mile range is more like 218 miles at freeway speeds, which is plenty for my wife to solely charge at home. The Tesla has no replaced our old TDI as our road-trip car, but there are certain intangibles with the Fiat that we love...like parking in tight spaces.

Previous gen was discontinued for the US awhile ago (article says 2019) and we didn't get the gen 2, which it looks like we'll get in 2024.
