Georgia becomes third state to shut down Johnson & Johnson vaccine site after adverse reactions
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/johnson-johnson-vaccine-georgia-reactions/

OT, I did watch this 12.5 minute video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8cYMT3ds4o. Would really be only applicable to Americans. There's too much in there to summarize accurately. It's complicated and murky to me, esp. since I'm not a lawyer.

CDC is still recommending the J&J vaccine as of yesterday. https://www.ncdhhs.gov/news/press-releases/cdc-finds-no-safety-issues-recommends-continuing-administer-vaccine-following

Like Leftie, I'll take the temporary discomfort. Fatigue is lifting, no real soreness now except at the injection site and I expect to feel basically normal by tomorrow.

Sigh...

Half of vaccine rejectors believe it is safe to travel now, compared to 29% of vaccinated adults
https://today.yougov.com/topics/politics/articles-reports/2021/04/09/half-vaccine-rejectors-believe-safe-travel-now

There are numerous other troubling stats from the poll. Example:
Half of those who reject vaccines (52%) also say it is safe for them today to socialize (compared to just 30% of all Americans). Another 45% say it is safe for them to go without a mask now. Just one in five Americans overall (21%) think it is safe to go maskless today.

Many vaccine rejectors have little confidence in advice from leading national medical figures, like the CDC or Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Instead, nearly half in this group trust advice from former President Donald Trump. Only 21% of vaccine rejectors trust advice from the CDC, and just 13% trust medical advice from Dr. Fauci.

For the most part, vaccine rejectors believe there is little risk to themselves from COVID-19. Half (51%) rarely (29%) or never (22%) wear a mask in public; just 29% are even somewhat worried they might contract COVID-19, and 41% are not worried at all.
This probably helps explain the large # of people traveling: https://www.tsa.gov/coronavirus/passenger-throughput.

Get vaccinated in Ohio and get a shot at $1 million, Gov. Mike DeWine announces
https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/vaccinated-ohio-shot-1-million-221700404.html
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine on Wednesday announced a novel incentive program for people in his state to get vaccinated — a $1 million lottery.

DeWine, a Republican, said only people who've gotten the vaccine will be eligible to win the prize, which will be paid for by federal coronavirus funds.

"Two weeks from tonight on May 26th, we will announce a winner of a separate drawing for adults who have received at least their first dose of the vaccine. This announcement will occur each Wednesday for five weeks, and the winner each Wednesday will receive one million dollars,"DeWine said in a series of tweets.

"To be eligible to win, you must be at least 18 years of age or older on the day of the drawing. You must be an Ohio resident. And, you must be vaccinated before the drawing," he added.

I listened to this earlier today.

Ok, Cali's jumping on the bandwagon now...

California Announces Prizes Up to $1.5M For Those With COVID-19 Vaccine

The idiots are the people who won't get vaccinated. If you have been vaccinated, your chances of being infected or passing on a case of COVID are virtually nil.

As for those who refuse to be or can't be vaccinated....they will eventually reach 'herd immunity' levels of infection before the virus fades away. How many will die or get other long lasting problems from their infection is TBD. My biggest concern is that every transmission is an opportunity for a genetic mutation. Hopefully none of those mutations will create a worse variant than already exists.

97% of COVID-19 cases in King County are among unvaccinated people
https://www.kiro7.com/news/local/97-covid-19-cases-king-county-are-among-unvaccinated-people/427UY4YCZNCIVIKNIPXZPKIY2Q/

For those not aware, Seattle is in King County. There are some surrounding suburbs in it too such as Bellevue, Redmond and Kirkland.

Sigh...
Northern California counties once spared by COVID-19 now seeing cases surge

On this note, an acquaintance of mine who is FB friends w/me and did have a kidney transplant recently posted this on her wall/feed:
Dear friends,

Hope you can help raise awareness. As a transplant patient, even though I have received 2 doses of the Pfizer vaccine, I did NOT develop any antibodies to protect against COVID-19. For many transplant patients in similar situation, we will still need to be wearing masks and taking all those precautions and we rely on the public to protect us by getting their vaccines and being respectful of our circumstances.

Tonight, CBS news explained the findings behind the John Hopkins study on transplant patients and COVID-19 vaccines:
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/covid-19-vaccine-antibodies-transplant-recipients/

The other day, someone was saying to me without mask on a hiking trail, “Take off the mask, f**k”. I am sad that now I have to worry about another form of discrimination and other people potentially inflicting harm on me.

Please help spread the awareness and the science of the vaccine. Share this post.
I wasn't aware of this. I know she prior to all of this did post on FB pics of her getting her first or second dose.

She is Asian, like me.

People with certain blood diseases who are either undergoing treatment or who have active disease can also fail to develop antibodies. Between the Q-Anon morons and the anti-maskers (with plenty of overlap between the two groups) I feel like I live in a new dark Age.

Re: Q-Anon morons, I'd watched a CBSN original on conspiracy "theories". To me "theories" aren't even the right word in terms of the scientific method (e.g. hypothesis then theory). These are just fantasies that come from who knows where. A bunch of weirdos spread and somehow believe/assert are fact.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAWhOE1PEuY is a portion of that the larger piece. They talk to some of the followers. If you skip to about 3:50 or so, they show one of these morons in his process of "interpreting" drops from "Q". He later describes himself as a "digital soldier". At ~18:30, they show their meeting space where they have daily meetings of 20 to 30 people to "learn about" Q and other crap.

"Conspiracy memes" would be a better term, although "meme" implies a fixed behavior, while conspiracies morph over time as people add to them in order to feel important.

In Bend, COVID-19 patients flood hospital, ICU; 98% unvaccinated
https://www.oregonlive.com/coronavirus/2021/05/in-bend-covid-19-patients-flood-hospital-icu-98-unvaccinated.html

At this point, bar mutations I mostly don't care. If you are dumb enough to not get vaccinated, that's your choice. The bad part is the people who either can't get vaccinated, or for whom there's little or no effect. I'm happy to wear a mask around them when requested, but for the rest, the Darwin Awards are always accepting nominations. If nothing else, it's one way of changing the political makeup of the country.

Count the cost of disability caused by COVID-19

Focusing only on cases and deaths hides the pandemic’s lasting health burden on people, societies and economies.

The long haulers who cause a drain and the chance for mutation which may eventually produce a version the vaccine we had may not cover are reasons to care. I suspect we will end up with an annual covid shot.

While children tend to take it well I still look forward for shots for younger children so I don't have to care about school as much (I have a couple smaller children). I am glad we are down to 12 years old at least. The local school district will have a no mask, no social distance policy next fall we just got a mail yesterday, that mixed with the Japanese school where kids from various districts mix is a chance for spreading it around (my kids go to Japanese supplementary school). I hear it may be available in September.

Given the rate at which first-generation vaccines were developed, and that second-generation vaccines are under development, I suspect that by the time a booster will be necessary, at least one of the pills and/or nasal sprays will be ready for public consumption.

As to the anti-vaxxers, when I had my one-off bumper stickers duplicated for my Leaf, back in January, I had a fourth made, quoting Matthew 4:7 (which is also Luke 4:12, and which quotes Deuteronomy 6:16): "Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God."

It then interprets it according to the context in both of its Gospel appearances: "It's not His job to undo your suicidally stupid mistakes."

For my own part, I had my puppy-shot a month ago, and I go back in for the second tomorrow.
