I'm pretty sure that CarPlay support for Leaf didn't arrive until model year '18.

Take a look at these, for instance:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CarPlay#Hardware
https://usa.nissannews.com/en-US/releases/release-77b5f147884a4439bd10c4d9207f2237-us-2018-nissan-leaf-press-kit - search for CarPlay
https://usa.nissannews.com/en-US/releases/us-2016-nissan-leaf-press-kit - search for CarPlay

As for "I tried with and without cable".... ummm Wireless CarPlay is relatively new. There are still cars shipping now that support CarPlay but not Wireless CarPlay. Example would be 2021 Chevy Bolt, just like '17 to '20.

https://www.cars.com/articles/wireless-apple-carplay-and-android-auto-where-are-they-now-407297/ was last updated Feb 26, 2021. If that list is accurate, the only 2021 Nissan in the US that supports it is the Rogue and none for 2020 model year have it at all.

And, then you have some vehicles that don't support CarPlay at all (e.g. all Teslas).
