I do agree that you need to sell substantial amounts of power to just break even on the maintenance of the stations. Even at 100-150% mark up (.20/kWh) at commercial power rates, you are only making about $2-$3 dollars over power cost for most "fill ups", and utilization has a ways to go to make the business model whole.

I still find it funny that consumers sound outraged at the prices for EA, considering they are a convenience. As Bolt & Leaf EV owners are generally fundamentally....thrifty, I agree, its hard to believe they will push enough money into the system to sustain the infrastructure. Telsla owners are generally willing to pay the premium for the service, and the EA stops do represent additional convenience to the super chargers. But if the service is choppy (ex. only one Chademo available), then that will diminish their ability to pull in that traffic.

Guess what I am saying is that they should add the 2nd handle, offer an adapter at every station (and advertise that), and up the price.

Upping the price is a non-starter. Tesla subsidizes their superchargers, and EA has to compete with that.

So tell me again why EA (VW) would go out of their way to add more CHAdeMO handles, which only helps the competitors (Nissan, Tesla) sell cars?

I don't see Tesla owners pumping much money into the EA network. They already have their own network which is superior in cost (to them) and convenience. I know many Tesla drivers. Very few of them even own an adapter, and those that do use it only on the occasional free chargers, not the EA chargers. I have also traveled a lot in my Bolt. Not once have I run across a Tesla driver at an EA station. I've seen more Bolts than all other combined, but I also see I-Paces, e-Trons, Niros, and Konas out there. I've seen a Leaf or two, but they are few and far between. Far more CCS cars use EA than CHAdeMO. That imbalance will only grow as VW (and GM) release their upcoming lines of EVs.

I'm looking forward to seeing the VW iD4 and I had heard Kia was supposed to have a suit of EVs slowing releasing, including one that might have an 800v architecture. Can EA support 800v? Can anyone else?

EA can support 800V. That's what the Porche Taycan uses to charge at 320kW.

EA supports 800V widely.

Petro-Canada seems to have a bunch.
EVgo has a few stations that do. Probably others I don't know about.

Actually 270 kW max for the Taycan. IIRR, the only way to get the full 350 kW is with a 1kV pack, which no one has yet. Somebody, forget who, was talking about using 900V.

I thought EA was good with 800v.

What about others like chargepoint, normally 50kw stations? Can they even do 800v and you end up at half the amps? Or not at all?

I was just thinking how nice an ev RV would be with about 300 kwh or more of batteries. Good candidates for 800v or even higher.

Yes, EA's "350 kW" stations can charge 800 - 1,000 volt packs, but are limited to 350A max, which is why a Taycan or any car with an 800V pack is limited to no more than 270kW charging - 800*350 = 270,000 watts (270kW).

. . . The departure from their current pay-by-time model was undoubtedly inspired by California's decision to require EV charging stations to charge according to the amount of energy given to the vehicle, and not by how long the car was connected to the charging station.

The California legislation applies to all newly-installed Level 2 chargers beginning in 2021, and to new DC fast chargers beginning in 2023. Chargers installed before 2021 can continue to use time-based billing until 2031 (for Level 2 chargers) or 2033 (for DC fast chargers).

"We totally believe this is the right decision and we don't want to wait until 2023. We're going to implement this well ahead of 2023" - Electrify America CEO Giovanni Palazzo on transitioning from a time-based charging methiod to kWh based. . . ."

Palazzo said that the company will offer the pay-by-kWh pricing wherever they are allowed to, and only stick with the time-based pricing in states where charging by the kWh isn't allowed. . . .

EA realized they had provided newer chademo EVs with a price advantage and took steps to remedy it.

I doubt CHAdeMO pricing was a factor for them, as it's irrelevant to their plans.

EVgo pricing may be a factor, but as they remain mostly restricted to urban areas, EA still has a virtual monopoly on rural interstates. We can all be thankful that California is forcing the change, as per kWh pricing is both the fairest and easiest to compare, once we get enough stations to provide competition.

What I want to see is price/kWh vary by charging rate, to give us the equivalent of Regular/Mid-Grade/Premium, and which should keep the higher rate chargers free for those who need them.

^^^ List updated. With Camarillo (#429, 9/1/0) it's now reasonably practical to drive 101 from Santa Rosa to LA.

There's still a gap between S.R. and Eureka, awaiting the opening of at least one of the two "Coming soon" sites to complete the northern section on 101. And we'll need Soledad, Greenfield or both to open, plus one more site between Pismo Beach and Camarillo to make the southern part of 101 both easy and convenient in both directions.

Six sites have been added to the "Coming soon" list, making 116 to go with the 429 open. I believe Katy, TX is one; not sure about the rest.
