It does appear that Teslas on the whole are more durable and less likely to have mechanical problems than most other cars.
Tesla as a brand has generally not done real well in terms of reliability and it doesn't help that he X is a disaster. Look at the rankings

Consumer Reports requires at least two models with sufficient data in order to be included in its brand reliability rankings. With the introduction of the new Model X SUV, Tesla is now included and is ranked toward the bottom, at 25th. The Model X launched with abundant problems, including frequent malfunctions of the falcon-wing doors, water leaks, and infotainment and climate-control system problems. The Model S gained ground this year, improving to average reliability.
In order for johnlocke's statements to be true, Tesla would need to have be above average on an a consistent basis. If he replaced Teslas with Toyotas or Lexuses, the statement would be true.

CR's reliability results are from responses to surveys of vehicle owner's/lessees.

That said, reliability aside, Teslas do have numerous advantages over Leaf along with numerous disadvantages.

Tesla Model S and X Long Range Plus deliver more range: S gets 390 miles
https://www.greencarreports.com/new...ange-plus-deliver-more-range-s-gets-390-miles

On Friday, Tesla updated the range ratings for its longest-range versions of the Model S and Model X—to up to 390 miles for the S and 351 miles for the X.

That represents a boost of nearly 5% for the S and 7% for the X, versus the previous ratings of 373 and 327 miles, respectively, and puts numbers to the higher range that CEO Elon Musk had hinted about last month.

Perhaps to help clear any certification confusion, Tesla is renaming the vehicles this time: to Long Range Plus—even though pricing and features appear to otherwise be exactly the same. . . .

This recent update applies to all Tesla Model S and Model X cars made in recent months, according to CEO Elon Musk, via Twitter, and it will be “unlocked soon for free via software update.”

Musk clarified that the changes apply not to all versions since those last changes but to "many small hardware improvements throughout the car that have been introduced gradually over past several months."

I said Mechanical Problems. What i meant was problems with the drivetrain, suspension, and battery. Not problems with sticky windows or rattling doors. Unless you can tell me with a straight face that an ICE and transmission aren't more likely to fail than an electric motor and a single speed gearbox, I'll stand by what I said.

This whole argument about EVs being more reliable is a bit tired IMO. True the EV has fewer moving parts than an ICE with its engine and transmission, but those generally aren't where the problems are happening, particularly in the first 10 years of the vehicles life. Everything else that can go wrong is all the same, and boy there's plenty of it these days. We recently paid $600 to replace a lift gate latch mechanism that failed on a four year old car; not sure there's anything different about that part than what it would be on an EV.
Yeah there's some oil filters and air filters to replace over the years on an ICE but that's a very minimal expense.

TIL of supposedly an MCU1 to MCU2 $2500 upgrade available for S and X built March 2018 or earlier from TiVocommunity: https://www.tesla.com/support/infotainment.

Oddly (as pointed out on TCF), there's this:
Is anything removed with the Infotainment Upgrade?
Yes. You will no longer have access to AM, FM or Sirius XM radio. You will still have access to internet radio and music streaming, including streaming over Bluetooth®.
Not sure what's up with FM going away. For whatever reason, Tesla had been shipping vehicles for awhile w/FM but w/o AM and Sirius XM.

It is kinda nice that they're at least providing an upgrade (albeit pricey) but it's unfortunate to have the above feature loss.

My S has an MCU1 with AP2 hardware; my X has an MCU2 with AP2.5 hardware. The biggest thing I miss with MCU1/AP2 is the lack of dashcam and Sentry mode recordings - and those features didn't even exist when I bought either car. The slightly slower maps on the MCU1 don't really bother me. I think I'd be more bothered by losing FM radio.

I'm not sure how they will deliver the FSD upgrade without the MCU upgrade, however.

Tesla Model S Becomes World's First 400-Plus Mile Electric Car
https://insideevs.com/news/428908/tesla-model-s-first-400-mile-ev/

Not because of any new test results from the EPA, or improvements since January, to be clear. Tesla simply petitioned the EPA and provided their own test results.

The base Model S recently got a price cut to $72k (402 mile EPA range, All Wheel Drive, basic auto pilot standard, 3.7 seconds 0-60).

Lucid has announced that their Model S competitor ("Lucid Air") will be $69,900 after the federal tax credit. Elon Musk just posted a tweet that says "The gauntlet has been thrown down! The prophecy will be fulfilled. Model S price changes to $69,420 tonight!"

Not bad for a 400 mile range touring car with terrific cargo space, fantastic performance, auto pilot, and access to the 1000+ station (USA) Supercharger Network. The S interior is pretty minimalist — and often criticized for that — versus the plush Lucid car. But the biggest difference is that you can actually buy a Model S right now. With Lucid, who knows?

From a corporate point of view, the S is a fairly small volume car nowadays, compared to the 3 and Y, so shrinking the margin on it won't have a big impact on profits.

This is getting crazy!

It's been hours since the Model S refresh news came out. I'm surprised nobody posted this yet.

They still haven't brought back the Pano-Roof, so I'll just hold onto mine. I drive with that open 8 months of the year.

Too bad the Model S didn't get automatic doors like the Model X.

But no stalks!?

How exactly does it guess when you want to be in reverse?

You simply think "Reverse." But you have to do it in Russian.
LOL! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ky-uzsw0kqw for those who didn't get the reference.

https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/tesla-model-s-update-prndl-shifter/ has a claim attributed to Electrek on how the car guesses.

Oh boy... I can't wait to hear how well this works in all sorts of non-garage cases like concrete parking bumpers (https://www.centurygrp.com/products/concrete-steps/parking-curbsbumpers/, motorcycles, trees, people, bikes, etc. in front or parking structures where there are cables in front.

Telepathy, j/k

I'm surprised they used such a small screen (8") for the back. Wished they had larger dual screens behind the front seats.

Can't wait for this to be implemented on the 3. SUA events of people driving into storefronts will go up by 10x! Buy calls!

Maybe by noticing the driver turned around and is looking out the back window. They do have cameras inside the car. Although far too many people don't turn around any more, with the advent of the reverse camera.
