Yes, he has done some testing with a high quality WIFI adapter.
See question from Sept. 3 in LEAF Spy Pro thread.

Probably will be IOS version, but getting approved on Apple takes longer and more involved than Android.

Help! I get stuck on Retry Elm as well. It appears it talks to the ELM briefly, but then goes into a waiting loop. Can Anyone tell me what I am doing wrong. I am using a mini Elm327 I got on Amazon.

The "?" on command 11 that causes the endless retries means this ELM does not support one of the commands needed to read data from the Leaf.

Note the ELM version is 2.1 instead of the previous v1.5 that people have been using.

I ordered one of these (2.1) but what the vendor sent me was a v1.5 so I have not been able to see if there is a workaround.

I did check the spec from the original maker of the ELM and v2.1 does still support the command I need. It seems like some ELM clone makers might be dropping support for all the commands so they are really not ELM compatible.

At this point I would not recommend buying an ELM with firmware version 2.1

(If someone would like to loan me a v2.1 that does not work I can test it to see what can be done. Just PM me)

I will send you the 2.1 and the CD that came with it. I'll PM you for an address. It isn't worth the effort of sending back and maybe it would read codes on my Z06 or jeep if this doesn't work.

Something I am curious about.

when I turn on leafspy it has a readout of the capacity of the battery in kw.

for me usually 18.5 to 19.5 after charging sometimes (rarely) 19.7 and one time 19.9

what is the source of this value? is it measured somehow? accuracy? reliability?

it seems that my battery holds a lot less than 19.5kw. in fact the first 2 kilowatts seems to be a bit of a fiction or something. no matter how careful I drive I can't get more than 2.5 to 3 miles to the kw those first 2 or so kilowatts.

once I get below 17 it smooths out and I get between 5 and 6 miles to the kilowatt consistently when I try to measure it.

its almost like its falsely reading more power in the battery than it is really holding so the kw value drops "rapidly" initially as it adjusts to the value the battery is "actually" holding.

my primary concern is this getting worse to where I am losing 1/4 or 1/3 my range but the system "thinks" there is more their than it really as so it incorrectly says my battery is healthier than it really is.

how do I diagnose this IE how do I figure it out? maybe it is nothing really to worry about or maybe it is. I am curious though.

The kWh calculation is based on the number of Gids read from the Leaf times the Wh/Gid number in Settings. The default is 75 Wh/Gid but you can change it in Settings.

You may want to move this question over to the Leaf Spy/Leaf Spy Pro topic as this topic is for Leaf Spy Lite which does not display this value. I am sure others there can comment on the accuracy of Gids. But yes the top gids do not seem to match the energy of the later gids. The bottom gids seem to have the opposite characteristic.

Hi Guys,

I meant to post this here, but created a New topic instead... sorry for the double post.

I just bought a new 2015 Leaf SV and I'm loving it, but I'm concerned about the fact that Leaf Spy only indicates 56.6 AHr capacity. I know a new battery should be 66 AHr.

I'm in Canada, and he car only has 500km (300mi) on it and is ~1 week old. The first day I got the car, the estimated range was 160km (171 in ECO mode). Now on a full charge in ECO mode it only shows ~138km range. The battery meter shows all 12 bars and charge is 100%. When we first got the car, the average was 5.5 km/kWh and we managed to get it up to 6.6 km/kWh, so we are not driving it hard (always ECO mode actually).

A friend of mine has a 2012 SV with 15000 km and Leaf Spy shows 59Ahr capacity for his.

Do I have a bad battery, or is there something different in a 2015 that Leaf Spy cannot handle?

How does Leaf Spy determine AHr? Does it calculate or is it something read directly from CAN bus that is calculated by Leaf computer?

I plan to take it back to the dealer for a capacity test, but I want to be informed before I go in.

I would appreciate some help/advice!

Thanks,
Andrew

The AHr value is read from the Leaf's BMS ECU (Battery Management System). Leaf Spy just reports the value it reads from the Leaf.

Thanks for the quick reply Turbo!

Looks like I have a problem and a good case to present to Nissan.

Note that some 2013 batteries read low although they did have normal range.

Also, replacement battery readings often start low and take several weeks for the LEAF to learn and report accurate capacity.

First report I have read of such low values on a 2015, but very few have tested and reported on brand new 2015s.

Very likely dealer and Nissan will want to wait several weeks before being concerned about the reported capacity.

And on the 2013's that reported low I don't think they did anything on those as the real driving range was normal.

Thanks for the insight Tim! I will keep an eye on it over the next few weeks and see if it chages, but so far it is very consistent at 56.36 kWh.

You might need to fully charge and then discharge a few times so the BMS can see the top and bottom of the cycle and learn the usable range.

I have analyzed the version 2.1 ELM Bryon sent me and determined that it just does not support the required commands. It only supports the limited set that Torque needs to use which is very basic since the ELM knows the ECU IDs for ICE vehicles and supplies the necessary flow control responses without needing to be programmed. Leaf uses totally different ECU IDs so the ELM needs to be told what they are which 2.1 (some maybe all) don't support.

This is a clone ELM327 bug in that the official spec for v2.1 supports all the commands from v1.5. For now I would stay away from any ELM327 listed as being v2.1. For clones this means a cost reduced version as there are only 2 circuit boards inside instead of 3. Being listed as v2.1 does not mean it supports the official v2.1 AT command set or even the v1.5 command set.

I have added code to give a message when Leaf Spy detects an ELM that does not support a required AT command.

Here is what it will look like. This message stays on screen for a fix time even if you exit the app. It also will display again if you change screen orientation.

My thanks to Bryon for sending me this v2.1 ELM. I have two more v2.1s on order to see if they also have the same problem.

I have finally gotten around to updating Leaf Spy Lite with all the latest improvements.

The test version (0.28.17) has just been uploaded to PlayStore. It should take about 90 min to show up there.

If you are in the testers group you can use the following link to install it. It does include a couple of retry enhancements not yet included in Leaf Spy or Pro. It should handles the case of getting stuck at the "Service Start" or "Retry Leaf 00" state.

Hi, I just got this adapter: http://www.ebay.com/itm/310917778774" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - but it doesn't work..

It is supposed to be compatible with leaf, at least I have it on good authority that other people from the Norwegian Leaf forums bought it and for them it works fine.

I get a message saying that "the adapter is a version 2.1 adapter, and that I should use version 1.5 adapter, because this one just supports hybrid cars" or something.. and that the adapter doesn't support FCSH command.. Any ideas? Can see noone with this problem.

Tried leaf spy pro as well..

[EDIT] I see that in my haste to post I didn't read the post above. The screenshot above is indeed what I'm seeing, but this adapter is marked as being 1.5 on the label.. And in the description on ebay... :/

What is important is what AT commands the ELM supports. If it were an official ELM from the original manufacturer then both 1.5 and 2.1 would work as they both support all the commands that are needed to talk to the Leaf.

However, these ELM clones can support or not support any commands they want independent of version number they list or report.

For this reason I have added this message to alert users to an ELM that is rejecting a needed ELM command.

The outside case on all these mini ELM327s all look alike but the inner electronics and firmware can be different. The good news is they are not that expensive so I would recommend trying a different vendor. Although the same vendor might get different batches of these from different production runs so even two from the same vendor bought at different times could be different inside.

Yes that would help. The last three times I tried to get a 2.1 for testing I received a 1.5. PM me and I will give you the address to send it too. Thanks.
