There have been a couple of recent 'incidents' that suggest that the anti-EV lobby is alive and well and living in...well...at least the US and UK.

We have this from the Volt thread on this forum:

GM is trademarking "range anxiety" and indicates the it will use this FUD as the core of the Volt marketing campaign

And we have this piece from Fully Charged:

Robert suggests that Mitsubishi is attempting to down-play their less-than-optimal conversion - and that they sent info to the BBC. The BBC apparently accepted the 'story' as 'fact' since it came from a reliable source -- that could have made the BBC an unwitting participant in the anti-EV effort. If this analysis is correct, I think it shows how our 'green' blog world can be so easily manipulated (intentionally or not) because they want a scoop and they want to get the story out fast...and as we've already seen, even the pro-EV bloggers don't have the experience and/or capability to really analyze the story and provide something close to a 'big picture'.

For a bit of history, we saw an overview of the 1990s-era EV madness with waiting lists for the EV1 on one hand being more than balanced by denials from GM that anyone wants the car.

Is the momentum of ICE really that strong - are people really so scared about EVs? Or is this simply a dramatic example of how powerful fear can be for the folks that will lose out when they can't sell ICE due to $20 a gallon gas?

I believe it is simply a dramatic example of how unethical GM is willing to be. Historically and currently, and therefore reasonably in the future as well.

To me it means GM Volt is losing to Leaf - may be they are not selling as well as they had hoped ?

LOL, why would they with so much price gouging. It seems to me that GM is digging its own grave.

Speaking of which....getting pretty tired of Autoblog Green publishing wrong information about the Leaf.

Until cars get in our hands in December, there will be little hard evidence to combat the FUD out there.

I plan on hooking my T.E.D. (http://www.theenergydetective.com/) up to my Leaf charger so I'll know EXACTLY how much juice I use and exactly how many miles per day I drive. I will have all this info posted on my website (http://www.jjhamilton.com/solar) and it will be irrefutable Average Joe data. I won't be alone in broadcasting the good and bad parts of EV's, and since Nissan is shooting for the mainstream driving public, it's only a matter of time before the FUD of the mainstream driving public begins to shift.

I'm happy to be a part of making that shift happen.

So I say let the FUD happen....it's days are numbered.

One point is that it's not just GM slinging the mud. Is Mitsubishi using the 'EV1 marketing process' to down-play the iMIEV and all other EVs in the process? The Leaf is far ahead of the EV pack - so they're getting plenty of mud.

We not only have GM playing the 'range anxiety' card, but now we have Mitsubishi dropping the 'resale value' card...

There's enough bad info floating around that suggests EVs aren't a great option - but man - when companies with 'horses in the race' add to the anti-EV 'fire'... Yuk!

The LEAF is a game changer... pure and simple.

The only time we'll ever need to use my Civic Hybrid now (besides my wife's or myself's commute - whoever wins the arm wrestling match that day) would be for longer trips on the weekend.

For everything around town and commutes the LEAF will be my PRIMARY car. It is very very rare that I go over 100 miles in a day.

I think that once these cars are out there... and real world stories are there. And I let people drive the car... slowly but surely people will see the light.

“By all means, GM can have ‘range anxiety,’” Tesla VP of Communications, Ricardo Reyes. “To Roadster owners, the term is as irrelevant as ‘gas stop’ or ‘smog check.’ We are, however, looking into trademarking ‘Tesla grin.’”
