Buying an AZE0

Mon Apr 12, 2021 4:31 am

Hi all, my wife and I are considering purchasing a Leaf AZE0 from an import dealership in Melbourne Australia and then driving it down to my home in Tasmania.

The model we’re considering shows 11 bars of battery health with 17,000kms on the clock. This seems a low number of kms for 1 bar being missing. I’ve asked the dealer for the LeafSpy report which I should get tomorrow.

Assuming the battery health is fine and it’s just not calibrated properly, what other questions should I be asking? What are red flags I should look out for?

If you are talking about a pre-2018 Leaf, I have a guide for that. Note that the battery info, along with exact option configurations, may well be different in your region. I'll link it shortly.

Thank you! I’m just reading it now.

I think it’s an attractive proposition if the battery degrades quickly and we can get a 40kw replacement.

Yes, but a 30kwh Leaf with only one bar missing may take a long time to lose three more. Check to see if it's had the BMS update.

I agree with @LeftieBiker's assessment, but since you are thinking about the "free warranty replacement" route, you might want to download https://stantonzeff.com/nissan-leaf and read an article I wrote about my experience (scroll to bottom of that page).

There is one weak cell. Probably not weak enough to trigger a warranty replacement, but enough to quite possibly reduce the car's range at a low state of charge (SOC). I would not buy the car, because it has an issue with the battery that isn't likely to be fixed for free by Nissan - at least not any time soon.

Mostly I just want to post this cell replacement procedure article here so that I can find it if I ever need it, but also posting it in case the OP is adventurous and has worked with high voltages before:

Hi all, the plan has changed and now I’m considering this one: https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/detail ... D-19543165

Here is the leafspy reading, does this look good?

That one has a good cell profile (although weak cells can be masked by a high state of charge). What concerns me is the 103% SOH, or state of health. That shouldn't, AFAIK, ever read more than 100%. With that in mind, I suspect a BMS reset...
