So this is a feature that I think should have been mandatory on the Leaf, since it increases safety tremendously. I was so upset that this feature wasn't there, so I added it myself.

Power draw can be lowered to 500W and still charge the car. The car itself draws roughly 300W, so only 200W will then go into the battery. This is ideal for those solar builds, but keep in mind that efficiency will be low at these extremely low power levels!
 
My rockpals 500watthour pack and solar panels look like a viable option again.

The car overhead is a consideration though. To your point, we would need 500w of continious power to make it minimally worth it, and add a gentle mile per hour.
