I want to install a video logger in my leaf, which requires running some wires from rear-view mirror and tapping into switched 12V.
Does anyone have pics/instructions to safely do that, especially routing wires around side impact airbags, and where is the best place to tap into 12V?
And... rear-view mirror has some 12V supply for HomeLink and stuff... I wonder if I can pull additional 1Amp from there... Any suggestions?

Did you mean car DVR? It's very much a Russian thing. :) I've been using it for years in all my cars, but never bothered with wiring. I would be curious if you can document your installation process.

I've been interested in installing a car DVR/blackbox as well, but haven't pulled the trigger due to difficulties deciding on which brand to purchase and needing to deal with the wiring issues. Details on your installation process or anyone whose done it would be greatly appreciated.

Yep, something like it, I was thinking about it for some times, but the cost was the issue, Finally some Korean company (Avic) designed it for my likings - 2 cameras one facing forward, one backwards, no separate wiring for the cameras, all-in one compact unit that perfectly hides behind rearview mirror.
On top of that they put in GPS, G-sensors, mike and night-time infra red illuminator.
It can record by trigger (G-sensor or you press the button) or continuously... you can even get the eco-report measuring how hard you brake and accelerate.
It also has accident report generator, where you can grab some stills from video with location, speed and G forces recorded and add your comments.
Pretty cool stuff, and you can take it from one car to another, and all of these for $300... just got it yesterday, tested it, liked it, so, time to hide dangling power cable...

Are you referring to this one?

I've researched numerous DVRs and the all suffer from the same thing, night recording.

This is currently the highly rated one for it's compactness and night capabilities, but I am looking for one with a screen and dual cameras.

Yes, the first one http://www.brickhousesecurity.com/voyager-car-camera-gps-logger.html
It has a night infra red illuminator for the insides of the car. For outside, I don't think anyone can come up with cheap solution which will involve some powerful wide IR projector to get a good quality video from outside in worst lighting conditions (need to remain blind to incoming headlamps and record dimly lit details from almost the same direction)

As of the screen, it is really a bother for this kind of technology... "Black box" recorders usually don't have screens, it not your usual camcoder or camera, you usually won't be browsing/looking into it, so it kind of wasteful to have a small screen, where you won't be able to see details anyway and which you would rarely use, but it'll take space and money...

But really, I'd like to keep the topic on to find out how exactly I can route the wires safely... we can open another one talking about which car DVR is better ;)
