I put one of those "non slip" mats (specifically sold for phones) on the flat surface in front of the cup holders and simply lay my iPhone there. It never moves and I can still see the face if I need to.

I think what your asking is like "What brand of jeans fits best?" :)

I have gone through at least a dozen and finally found one I can tolerate. It fits in the CD slot or a crack / gap in the dash. I have one in the van, wagon and leaf and haven't had one break or drop a phone.

That's the same style holder I had in my old car but it attached to the air vents. I loved it but I found that the air vents in the leaf were not a good place to attach it to, it wouldn't stay up.

I had this style so I'd say avoid them.

I had a iOttie One Touch wind-shield mount, but I was hoping to find a non-windshield mount. Wind shield mounts obstructs my view. It would be nice to be able to mount it, say, near the vents, but the Leaf lacks suction-able flat surfaces, and vent mounts are usually too flimsy.

I've bought three iOttie One Touch mounts over the years (not because they broke but because they are good mounts, and I've had different devices). They stick well to the dash or the windshield. There is a horizontal flat surface just above the upper left corner of the black center stack bezel. It's a perfect fit for the suction cup. It is textured, but don't worry, it sucks itself in place just fine (just make sure both mounting surfaces are clean- wash the suction cup if it's dirty with warm soapy water).

The camera was at chest level, so it looks like it's blocking the view out the windshield- but it isn't for me. If you adjust your mount to sit low, it will give you a full clear view out the windshield.

I use Mountek mounts myself.
I don't have one of the newer, magnetic kind.
I have this one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004G1L52Q" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It's designed to slide into a CD player slot.
In the Leaf, I actually open the head unit and put it into the space at the top, then close the unit to have it clamp down on the mount.
Works pretty well.

Stickyback velcro on the above vertical surface and back of phone works great for me. Can see the display and remove easily for security.

I second the use of the iOttie One Touch. It uses a sticky suction cup that will attach to the curved, textured dash board. See this thread.

I have this one, but I paid $13 on sale.
As an update: it worked pretty well until our first real cold snap. At that point, it fell off the dash and I've not been able to get it to stay connected since.

And an update to that: I contacted iOttie back in November and they replaced the One Touch for free (sent me a new one and told me to discard the old one). I installed it and haven't had a problem since. I now have them two of our other cars and haven't had a problem.

I bought the new mountek one that gets wedged above the navigation screen:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004G1L52Q/?tag=myelecarfor-20&" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It blocks view of the screen, which I find annoying when using the backup camera. It's too bad, because it's otherwise a good mount.

You can remove that adjustment screw that sticks out of the bottom - it's not needed when it's wedged above the screen. That will solve the worst of the blocking.

My wife uses this one

http://www.amazon.com/iMagnet-Cradle-less-Universal-Windshield-Dashboard/dp/B008IOQ3K6/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1422074468&sr=1-1&keywords=magnetic+phone+holder" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And i use this one

http://www.amazon.com/InfiniApps-Smartphones-Cradle-less-Quick-snap-technology/dp/B00DPMNNUO/ref=sr_1_13?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1422074532&sr=1-13&keywords=magnetic+phone+holder" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I love them. Easy to mount the phones and remove to answer a phone call.

I found http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JG30N4K works in the Leaf so long as the phone is thin enough, an overly thick phone in a overly thick case will pop out of it.

I switched to http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V2RK1XQ for one phone but then had to switch back to the first one when I got a phone with a screen so large that this wouldn't open up enough to hold it.

So over the course of 3 phones and two cars I went for mount A, B, A and I liked A better in the long run.

For those that said they didn't like the mount on the vents in the Leaf I like it because I live far enough south that I'm running AC or vent 99% of the time and the cool or neutral air works for cooling off the phone. If you live somewhere north and run heat through the top vents all the time the phone might not like that but I'd just run it on the floor only, floor and windshield vents (defrost), or defrost only.

I find it works in the vents for me and the vent mounts are cheaper.

I suggest you find a mount that fits your phone and use the strongest 3M double-stick tape to attach it to the top left corner of the black bezel of the NAV system. It will be easy to view the phone, will not obstruct the view of the road, will not block the view of the NAV screen, and will be easy to remove when necessary. I mounted a commercial mount with standard 4-hole accessory mounting arrangement that way in my 2011. I then attached the charging cradle specific for my BlackBerry to that mount. I thought I would just replace the bezel if I ever needed to remove the mount and could not clean up the tape residue. I did not care about leaving tape residue when I went to the body shop to remove personal items from the 2011, but the 3M tape peeled off of the black bezel without leaving a mess. That 3M tape held for almost 3 years in our extreme temperatures and was still holding when I peeled it off. If you use this method, clean the bezel and mount with alcohol wipes and allow to dry before applying the tape.

With the issue of dust and very large temperature swings, I'm trying to find a mechanical solution that works well. Vent or wedge type of mount. I just want to see where folks put them and how they work for unobstructed view.

Note: I'm located in Colorado - we can have temp swings of 60, 70 and even more over a 24 hour period. With this kind of thermal variation, suction cups and sticky tape don't always do so well.

Ironmanco,

I have used the super strong 3M double stick tape for glass-mount antennas and for this phone mount application and never had a failure as long as both surfaces are clean and dry. If you cannot find a mechanical mount that you like, I suggest you give the tape a try. As you noted, suction cups will not be reliable for long term use with the night/day temperature swings in Colorado and Arizona.

I know this is an old thread, but I have been really pleased with my recent purchase of this MPOW phone mount for my 2012 SL. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0158H6CTM/ It's only $10, fits snugly on one of the air vents without blocking any views or obstructing much airflow. Plus, it has the adjustable angle and the magnet is very strong. Highly recommended!
