ps: when I use the orignal cig lighter - usb cable it starts just fine when I start the car.
Yeah, you need to use that original cig lighter adapter. I wired mine up above the map lights.

The USB spec requires 4 pins, but mini- (and micro-) USB connectors have 5 pins, where pin #4 is unused. Many dash cam manufacturers have decided that if +5v is available on pin #1 (as normal), then assume the camera is connected to a computer. However, if +5v is instead available on pin 4 (what the cig lighter adapter does), then assume the camera is powered on in the car, and turn the camera on automatically.

Hi, the voltage is the same as in the cigarete plug..I think you just have bad voltage converter.I got cheap one from ebay and works great.For fire hazard and radio noise always wrap with thick aluminum foil and ground if possibe.

all good points and appreciated. the strange thing is, if I simply wait and unplug the usb connection at the camera and plug in straight back in, the camera starts. maybe I try moving +5v from 1 to 4. whats the worst than can happen? :) (famous last words)

Has anyone tried something like this? http://www.mirrortap.com/mt2000.html#Micro" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; http://www.mirrortap.com/docs/instructions/mt-2012.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Seems like the fit is pretty snug. I plan to hook this up to a 12-5v converter. My only concern is that it is overpriced and I will need to modify it anyways. If I could find out what kind of banana plugs they used it would be helpful. Also not sure if the inline fuse is necessary since the mirror should also be attached to a fuse.

seems a bit unnecessary I'd say. As you say, you'll have to add the 12v-5v transformer anyway. and you'd have to open the mirror instead of just tapping into the easily accessible cables behind the head lights. overall, I don't think it's worth it.

similar to what the Porsche guys are doing to hardwire the V1s http://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...ower-hardwire-installation-for-the-997-a.html. But I guess there is more demand on a Porsche forum than a Leaf one! :)

OP was kind enough to answer my question. It is indeed a force fit. To remove the map light on a MY2013, follow these instructions:
1. Next to the map unit, press up on the headliner fabric between the map unit and the windshield to disengage the catches.
2. Gently pull down on the map unit nearest the windshield until it clears the headliner.
3. Pull the map unit towards the windshield to disengage the catches on the side of the map unit away from the windshield.
4. Disengage the microphone wires.
5. Disengage the map light power wires by pressing down on the little tab in the middle by the wires.
6. Map unit is now loose and free to be moved out of the way.

Thank you, this was really helpful. Just pulled down the map unit and put a 12v to 5v converter up there. Hooked it up to the MT-2015 and plugged it into the back of the mirror so as not to disturb any of the existing wiring.

update: I replaced my camera with another model and it works like a charm. somehow the voltage is not sufficient to switch the old cam on reliably

Finally got my wires tucked. The OP instructions didn't seem to work for the 2011. The map light just didn't want to separate from the liner. In the process of trying, the liner popped off the ceiling so, instead, I just tucked the wires in there. Feeling around with my fingers, I was able to locate and dislodge the tape securing the mirror supply wires. This allowed me to pull more out and splice into as show below. Then I just tucked them in and snapped the liner back into place.

Did you end up using this? If it works for you I will purchase it as well to save me the trouble of splicing wires.

Yes, see my replies a few back: http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=16152&start=20#p381940" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I gave more instructions here: http://www.reddit.com/r/leaf/comments/2d9qax/installing_a_dashcam_using_the_powered_rearview/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I also used this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0076AY6J8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If using the scotchlok make sure you insert bare wires, had to redo mine because I thought it would cut through the wire insulation.

I just wanted to say thanks.
I did basically this, I stripped back the OEM wire and soldered taps in, then soldered those wires to the prongs on my dash cameras factory plug. Once insulated it works great. I'm running a Trancend drive pro 200 it isn't special, but works. I have a BlackView in the VW but it doesn't have WiFi which is actually pretty great.

1.to remove map lights unit -do not use any sharp object, push up and separate celling fabric next to plastic trim of the unit.
2.Pulldown the front of the unit and move forward to un hook from the two rear tabs.
see pics:

I'm trying to do this but my map console seems quite firmly attached. By front of the unit do you mean the side at the front of the car?

(I have a 2017, wonder if they changed the tabs/hooks at all)

OK, got it off, just took a bit of force! Starting from the front (front of the car) did the trick.
