If prices hit $50/kWh hour and density doubled, so you could get a 100-120kWh battery for 5-6K, I could see that being attractive to a subset of owners in 4-5 years....still a cottage industry thoug.

The people who have put the 62kwh battery in the older leaf just used the whole 62kwh battery from a wrecked car.

Some one already tried to build a business around making new, bigger, better leaf batteries. They're call "fenix power".

They already have the infinity kwh leaf. It's called the versa.

Battery upgrades from salvaged Leafs looks like an easy job on the surface. A 3 hour job. Pull it in , drop the old battery, install the new one. Now for a little reality. How much time , effort and money is it going to take to set up this job? Where are you going to find a steady supply of reasonably price battery packs. Are you going to have to go to each pack and test it before purchase? How much effort will be put into recouping money from the old pack. You will either have to make or buy adapter cables and acquire CAN bus bridges. You may need equipment for programming Can bus bridges and testing battery packs. You will need electrical and computer skills. You will need customers that accept that their Nissan warranty is void. With all that being said, I am wondering if there would be a market for 2011-2012 Leafs upgraded with 40 KWH battery packs for about $10,000.00. There are a lot of older Leafs that other than the battery are in good condition. They may show 7 bars and be priced around $3500.00. Could you sell the old battery, buy and install an upgrade salvage battery, and other necessary parts and put it all together for under $10,000.00 ? I'll end here this is getting long and I have still left out lots of details(that's where the Devil is). I would appreciate your thoughts and comments. Thanks Kevin

No. Have you looked at the price of used '18 Leafs that still have some warranties left, including capacity and battery defects warranties?

Buy a used battery and get a free car attached to it with upgraded electronics. That's the problem here. Used Leafs are so cheap that it makes more sense to sell your old one and buy a newer model used. With 2018 and 2019 models coming off lease and Nissan's poor EV rep., those could be bought on the cheap and you still get a better, larger battery and improved electronics. When the Aryria comes out later this summer, Leafs will be available at fire sale prices.

That is what a lot of my friends and family are waiting on also. People focus on the shiny, new Ayria (more photos of the outside and inside here: https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/pictures/ ... roduction/ ) and hopeful that everyone starts trading in Gen 2 Leaf to get these and like you said, Gen 2 Leaf goes on fire sale and thus, trade in Gen 1 for nicer Gen 2 Leaf. :shock:
