About 230 miles total is the estimate. Leaving in the morning, and I need to be in Long Beach at 3pm for an EV study. I'll leave at 5pm to go home to San Diego, assuming that I have 100% battery (edit: that's going to be some serious traffic then, yuk).

I'm betting BIG on the Mitsubishi QC being available. Otherwise, it'll be a long, long day and night. My first charge will be in Huntington Beach at the Nissan dealer, and hopefully after a QC at Mitsu, then another charge at the dealer in Signal Hill while I tend to business (it's walking distance from the event of less than 2 miles).

I will try to make the return trip non-stop, and have Oceanside (25 miles from home) and Escondido (about 12 miles) as my emergency-add-some-juice spots. Obviously, I need something close to 40mph the entire way to have a chance, but I should be home around 8pm.

I'll stay off the freeways as much as I can, and might even drive through Camp Pendleton (that's safe, right? I can out run a tank ;-) )

Also, I'll probably spend a significant amount of time on highway 1 in Orange County, and the back roads in San Diego county.

IKEA(blink) or South Coast Plaza(chargepoint) are right off the 405 and far more entertaining than any HB Nissan dealer.
If on PCH the Fashion Island also has a couple chargepoint spots. Go early and take a loooong lunch.

Should be a cool day for climate control to stay completely off.

I don't think you will be driving through Camp Pendleton. Better to draft a truck through there IMO.

Climate control off was a given. I have the IKEA, Fashion Island, and South Coast loaded up, and may hit those, too. I have lots of time to get there, but I really want to get back. Driving a limited range electric car late at night in "foreign lands" doesn't sound fun if I really need a charge.

Tony, I live in Rancho Santa Fe. Five miles east of the I- 5 Encinitas boulevard exit. If you need some juice to get home, you can use my Blink

I have to give you serious credit! You are far more adventurous than I! Good luck on your travels!

The HB Nissan dealer (Surf City) hasn't been the most friendly to drivers, and their station location is poor (almost blocking front door)

It's too bad you can't make it up to Cypress since it's so close.

A delay is a delay, whether you're at 10% SOC or 50% SOC. You may want to pick up the extra boost earlier on, maybe near South Coast Plaza, since there's much to do there while waiting.

I live in HB (closer to PCH than the freeway, however) and can offer my EVSEUpgrade (cable is sitting in driveway). PM me if you want another backup spot.

Good luck, and let us know how it went.

Getting ready to launch. 5 hours to get there. I've cut some miles out of the route, which will help. I've got 200 feet of L6 equipped extension cords, tires to 44psi, spare to 60psi, jack, lug wrench, camera, EVSE upgrade Gen2, and my 9 year old to have lunch and dinner with.

Planning a stop in Laguna or Fashion Valley, before Cypress. Hopefully no problems at the Long Beach Nissan (Signal Hill), because I need 100% there. Finding charging in the dark won't be fun.

Woo hoo !!!!

Tony,

PM me and I will give you my phone number, I live about 15 minutes from Mitsu in Cypress. I can give you a charge if they are closed.

Good Luck,
Mitch

Bad news. The fuel nozzle broke a few days ago on the Mitsubishi Eaton DC charger. I'm going to do about 10 minutes of L2, and get going. 7.3 miles to go, with 5.9 burned into LBW. For those of you playing at home, I still have 5-7 miles of VLB, and if I drive slow enough, maybe a couple miles until I hit VLB.

I probably won't get the car on the Nissan charger until 5pm. And pump in just enough to get me to a Swedish meatballs at IKEA (known good charger as of an hour ago) or South Coast Plaza.

98.7 driven, 7.3 to go.

A bit less than 4 hours.

I would not leave South Coast Plaza with less than 100%

You can kill at least and hour playing computer games in the Microsoft store. We play Galactic Alliance on the table game.
Alwaya a Kinect game going you can join in. Plenty of other stuff and other stores.
Plenty of places to sit down and take your time eating.

The village movie theater has no shows for a 9 yo, (rated R).

Looks like Regency Village is showing Jack and Jill (PG). Edwards South Coast Plaza and Edwards Fashion Island are both playing "Jack and Jill", "Puss in Boots", and "Puss in Boots 3D", all PG.

To me, in the absence of L3 charging, the biggest obstacle to SD-OC travel is the need to find two movies we'd like to see. :)

You're a Trooper, Tony. But so is your 9 yr old! :)

Another charging option to through into the mix as you head
home, there is a Chargepoint online at a Kohl's in Laguna Niguel
27380 Heather Ridge Rd, Laguna Niguel. It's on the East side
of the building. Picked up a charge there this past weekend.

FWIW, it's also within walking distance to a Costco and a Walmart.

Go Tony, Go!

My offer is still open for a charge in Irvine, if you're desperate. PM me if needed. But by then, you'd be south of South Coast Plaza or IKEA, so you'll probably already be fully charged.

So far, for the day, 125 miles covered, 5.9 m/kWh. I cruised into the the current charger with about 4 miles burned in VLB. I probably had at least another mile or three to go! It's 105 miles directly home, so I would feel most comfortable with a 100% charge to go home, I'll probably launch with less and adjust the speed to match.

I got an extremely fortuitous tip to the City of Lakewood city office; two Clipper Creeks, no cards, stone simple machines. Started charging about 5:40, so I might launch after a movie and dinner. Did I mention that there is a big shopping mall across the street? How awesome is that?

Thanks for the pointers everyone! I might end up at a hotel, but my intent is to get home "after midnight".

Nice driving - 5.9 mi/kWh is impressive - how are you managing that kind of efficiency without getting in the way of too many drivers?

Your experience really enforces how much of a difference even a 6.6 kW charger would make over 3.3 kW L2 charging especially knowing that every single EVSE you've stopped at today supports charging at that rate...

Better still, QC.

We had a nice choice of restaurants, so we picked Fudruckers (it has an arcade). Watching Jack and Jill now, after hanging out in Best Buy.

If I had a 6.6 charger, I'd be leaving soon;

Your car's status: plugged in, charging, 42% charged

Another three hours to 100%?? I think I would get a room.

I did not realize at first that today was the trip. I think a late start and no QC has put you behind the curve.
No worries, it is all in fun ;)
