The Nissan Leaf is a great car to drive; once you have burnt off enough V8s from the traffic lights, one moves to eco-driving. Moreover, one can drive at 45mph on the freeway, without the *instant rage* that doing the same with a Toyota Prius would invoke.

The Leaf is interesting because the car is so well made, that the battery fails before anything goes wrong (besides the 12v battery, but that is another matter).

Nissan are refusing battery replacements (out of warranty) for many owners. Making this a throwaway car. This is very sad, and a complete abuse of the environment.

Apparently the BMS stops the ROM being extracted. Yet, some places seem to have obtained and modified the ROM. The ‘Right To Repair’ would allow batteries to be replaced. But Nissan has locked down the Leaf, like it is an iPhone.

If anyone knows of a BMS ROM, send me a message, it would be appreciated, and would interrupt my casting of ‘Meteo’ :)

This is news to me. That said the cost for a new 24 kWh pack when I last monitored sounded really high and was almost always more than the value of the vehicle by the time it's down to 8 bars or less.

There is an eeprom in the pack but i haven't read the contents yet--i would suspect that is where the VIN data is stored. So it could be removed and soldered into the replacement pack, or contents read and written into a new chip. The Consult tool has the ability to read and write this data.

i haven't studied up on this, but it seems that Dala would know quite a bit about this since he has made pack swaps and updates, etc.

and Muxsan as well.
They use a MITM (Man In The Middle) arrangement, an additional interface that sits, on the Canbus, in between the BMS and the Car Electronics.
Have a look:

I've never heard of this before. Can you point to some examples? Seems like Nissan would happily take a customer's cash to pay for a battery replacement.

The VCM and the LBC (aka BMS) must be paired in order for a different pack to be swapped in. The Muxsan MITM CAN bridge and the "HV Battery Pairing Tool" from EVs Enhanced will reprogram either the VCM or the LBC - not sure which...

EVs Enhanced has other interesting tools here:

Many other cool enhancements here too:

Not sure about shipping arrangements though, as they are located in NZ...
