I'm not terribly optimistic about a good aftermarket solution.

Nissan sold a half million Leafs since 2011. That's "bubkis" as my grandmother would say -- nothing. They sell almost a half million units of all their cars per month. If you assume that about half or 2/3 of those Leafs are old enough for the battery to be an issue, that's less than 350,000 potential customers worldwide. Not a lot, not enough for a larger aftermarket company, or the replacement part division of Nissan, to bother with such an expensive item that has big shipping costs. Fenix bet on that, and along with all their other incompetency, lost. We are not talking something like rebuilt alternators for the millions of Sentras out there.

What seems to be springing up are these independent shops around the world. Some areas are better served than others -- ie: the Pacific NW in the US, the Netherlands, a guy just popped up in TX, So CA, MA in the US, etc. Some are better than others and they all offer different products -- refurbished, plain old used, etc.

Until Nissan launches a refurbished battery program elsewhere, like the one they have in Japan, there is not much to hope for from them aside from paying around ten grand for a new battery (at which point you may as well buy a new car or later model). Or perhaps someone else will come along with a viable aftermarket option if they can make the business model work. Or maybe Fenix will be a phoenix ;-)

As I said, I put the $2500 refund from Fenix in my savings account for a rainy day. For now, my current range is fine. But perhaps that may end up being a down payment (along with the trade-in) on something newer.

Yep.

For perspective, https://www.nissan-global.com/EN/IR/INDIVIDUAL/GLOBALSALES/ has a sales chart of Nissan global sales per year. It's been ranging from 4 million to almost 6 million vehicles per year. At their peak of 5.77 million, that's ~480K per month, on average.

In the US alone, per https://usa.nissannews.com/en-US/releases/release-beb6420a9f2916baf13a4ed150000089-nissan-group-reports-fourth-quarter-2020-and-2020-calendar-year-us-sales, Nissan sold almost 228K Rogues in 2020 and 350K in 2019.

And for the example Sentra alternators, I bet that part is shared w/numerous other Nissan models worldwide and possibly others in the Nissan Renault Alliance (https://www.alliance-2022.com/about-us/), including Renault Samsung Motors and possibly, eventually Mitsubishi Motors.

Their web page earlier this month was still claiming installs starting in July... :) Everything else there gave the impression they were still in business selling/collecting $ or whatever.... Their blog entries had zip from 2021 though.

For kicks, I checked https://fenix.systems/ again tonight and it's returned to 404 status again.

FWIW, I put a note on the first post and changed the thread title, for the next time the website comes back to life and so that someone doesn't see the thread and think they are real.

Good idea! as anyone who's been following this thread knows this company is a scam, whether it was originally intended to be one is up for debate but at this point, there is no doubt :(

Thank you.

https://fenix.systems/ is fixed from its 404 problems. As before, it still claims installations are starting in July...

Maybe Nikola and Fenix can share a web server somewhere...

I see no changes but https://fenix.systems/blog still at the top has a blog entry from Sept 12... 2020.

And, "Installations starting in July!" is still all over the place.

Just an update: I ended up going to Ace Hybrid Group in Santa Ana, CA (Orange County, about 40 miles south of LA) and got a refurbished 30 kWh battery with 12 bars to replace my 7-bar 24. It has about 90% SOH with a 1-year warranty, so I am getting about 95 miles of range, which is double what I got from the old battery. That's plenty for me since I am semi-retired and work from home. Car runs great -- no complaints. The Fenix refund paid about 1/3 of the replacement battery cost.

I think independent shops are going to be where people can get used or refurbished batteries for their older Leafs. This is not a promising national or global market for a big company, given the slow decrease in older Leaf's on the road meaning a shrinking market (and there just aren't all that many to begin with, about 500K worldwide), the customized nature of refurbishing the batteries and the cost of shipping them due to their weight. Hopefully, there will be more shops doing this work over time.

Facebook has a Nissan Leaf Aftermarket Battery page where many of the shops list themselves.

Did you consider the "repair" offering - for $2500 they claim to bring your battery (7 bars min) back to near or at full range? If there is such a process, that'd be quite amazing for the cost. I wonder about the details of what they do.

They don't recommend the repair option -- too iffy. They told me that they are considering totally dropping it and just offering remanufactured/refurbished/rebuilt batteries. So far, 2 months in and I'm satisfied.

Since there is no more discussion about Fenix Power, I've locked this. Please create a new topic to discuss other aftermarket battery replacement options.
