streaming video services

Fri Jan 15, 2021 4:48 pm

Discuss services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+, CBS All Access, Peacock and the like here.

I'll start.

Apple extends existing Apple TV+ free trials for a second time
https://appleinsider.com/articles/21/01 ... econd-time

That's a service I wouldn't pay for. I did watch the first few eps of For All Mankind but ummm, somehow it doesn't draw me in that much and I wouldn't pay for the service based upon that.

I'm not normally an Amazon Prime subscriber but I have turned it on for a few months at a time to watch new season of Man in the High Castle (over now) and The Expanse. The Expanse got cancelled by SyFy but Amazon saved the show and took it over.

We've had Netflix for years and years, not so happy that they keep raising the prices for all the Netflix original programming(we mainly use it for older TV programs) but we still get benefit out of it. We(my daughter) has Amazon Prime which I occasionally use for concert/music type content, personally, I wouldn't pay for it but my daughter likes the free 2-day Amazon shipping and the streaming comes with it. She also gets a free(commercial supported) version of Hulu, she occasionally watches it but I haven't seen anything of interest. My other daughter pays for Disney+ and watches it constantly, I've watched it once when Hamilton came out, it's not supported on my Tivo which is mainly how I watch TV. I'd probably like to get Peacock but my streamer or Tivo doesn't support it. I suppose I could watch it on my PC but haven't had time to look into it. I've been told Peacock has some British TV programmes I might like.
Streaming really seems to be the future(or even now) but I'm still kind of old school and watch the majority of my TV through my Tivo recording the 60+ channels I get with my antenna, I don't have pay-TV and only use Xfinity for my internet.

We kept Hulu for waay too long. It's both expensive and low in good content - heck, it's low in content, period. My housemate was watching British TV with it for a while, but she got caught up, and a few month later, we dumped it.

For British content you can get Britbox and Acorn which are also available as channels in Prime video as well as separately. I do have these two.
I ended up dumping netflix recently myself. didn't watch enough.

Apple TV was kinda fun, watching the 2 guys on electric motorcycles riding from Tierra del Fuego to LA (Long way Up, I think). But other than that they really have almost nothing to watch, back to Netflix for us (we get a lot of DVDs, some better stuff on DVD...) Won't pay Amazon. PBS is beginning to have some decent programs: the Country Music series, Night on Earth (not THAT one), etc.

Seems like the Paramount+ folks have released a bunch of info on the content that will be on it.

https://www.engadget.com/paramount-plus ... 38169.html has a PDF which I haven't had a chance to read yet.
https://www.cnbc.com/2021/02/24/paramou ... slate.html also has some more info.

Thanks to https://www.tivocommunity.com/community ... t-12254301, I learned of a deal to get 1 year of commercial free CBS All Access for $25, it seems.

See https://slickdeals.net/e/14691299-get-1 ... r-25-25-00. I did it last night and confirm https://slickdeals.net/e/14691299-get-1 ... =145604374 works.

Since https://help.cbs.com/s/article/Should-I ... ubscribers says
I already have a separate CBS All Access subscription, and I'm a SportsLine or 247Sports subscriber. How do I link both accounts?

We can’t link existing CBS All Access subscriptions to SportsLine or 247Sports subscriptions, but you won’t need to! Your SportsLine or 247Sports subscription already includes a CBS All Access Commercial Free plan at no extra cost to you.
I created a new CBS All Access account w/another email address using this trick w/Gmail (https://gmail.googleblog.com/2008/03/2- ... -your.html and https://support.google.com/a/users/answer/9308648?hl=en).
The "cancel" part is to not really cancel. When you attempt to cancel, it'll offer to give you another 6 months, so you need to click on the blue blue GET FREE TIME! button.

CBS All Access via the above works for me and seems ad free. I tried watching some of Picard show and Smithsonian Channel shows.
