Hi -

A friend just sent me this:

https://refundadvocacy.com/auto-parts-indirect/
"...Manufacturers Illegally Fix Prices
"Years ago a bunch of auto parts manufacturers got together and illegally fixed the price of certain car parts. Because car makers paid too much, they charged you too much. An investigation by the Department of Justice uncovered this scheme, leading to them paying a $1.2 Billion settlement to people who overpaid for their cars. The money is in an account and now it’s time for anyone who got hurt to file for their money back. Find out below if you qualify. ...."

In fact, the 2012 Leaf I leased is one of the many vehicles on the lists. Has anyone filed on this? I haven't done so yet. I hadn't even heard of it, don't know what to make of it. Does anyone have a view as to whether buyers/lessees were really harmed or is this largely lawyers making more out of an issue than should have been done? I guess if I were convinced of this last point it would give me added hesitation about filing.

I'd heard of an auto parts class action settlement via FB ads. I have one of these that I saved I think months ago that points to https://www.myautorefund.com/ from https://www.facebook.com/refundrecoverygroup/.

A quick Google search turns up these, for example:
https://www.autopartsclass.com/ *
https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/time-is-running-out-for-consumers-and-businesses-to-get-100-or-more-from-over-1-2-billion-in-auto-parts-settlements-300961813.html
https://abc7news.com/quicktip-quick-tip-abc7-news/5747705/ (this is a local TV station for me)

I plan to do a bit more digging on the domain I put a * next to. I have owned or leased numerous vehicles included and will likely submit a claim somewhere.

FWIW, for class action settlements, I've had settlement amounts ranging from nothing (once it was user error on my part) to once a check for over $3000! This is what I wrote on another forum in 2016:
"The other I got was SHOCKING to me... I recently received a class action settlement check for over $3000! It was involving unauthorized recording of phone calls to certain apartment companies. I did in fact call some of those companies while searching for an apartment. When it looks like I might get some award that's worth my time (e.g. something where the amount is stated or where I can make an estimate and it's isn't crap like a back of blank CD-Rs), I tend to file...

I was amazed to receive a check THAT large. I'm guessing a lot of people didn't file claims."

Thanks, good to know. I also ran across this which gave perspective on how old this one is:

May 21, 2018 01:00 AM $1 billion in payouts for supplier price-fixing

The U.S. Department of Justice's investigation went public in 2010, when
the FBI raided the offices of Yazaki North America Inc., Denso
International America Inc. and Tokai Rika Group North America. Japanese
suppliers and their U.S. subsidiaries were the initial focus of U.S.
authorities, but parallel investigations were launched in Europe and
Asia.

In September 2011, Furukawa Electric Co. of Japan became the first
supplier to plead guilty in the criminal case. Three of its executives
in the U.S. served jail time, and the company agreed to pay a $200
million fine.

Across the investigation, 49 companies were charged, resulting in 45
plea agreements. Two other companies were acquitted, and charges against
two more remain outstanding, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of
Justice Antitrust Division said.

Anyone do any more digging into this? I recall seeing some more FB ads on this but need to see if I can find if they were from other companies/sites.

The deadline to claim is coming up soon: June 18, 2020. I will very likely be filing a claim.

edit: One of them came from https://www.facebook.com/refundadvocacy/posts/1074832316227233, which seems to be the same outfit as in theOP.

I signed on. Apparently leasing a 2013 Nissan Leaf is a qualifying purchase or lease. I wonder who will inherit the settlement?
http://www.autopartsclass.com/included includes '18 Leaf.

http://www.autopartsclass.com//faq under question 7 near the end specifies which states it applies to:
These cases are proceeding as class actions seeking monetary recovery for consumers and businesses in 30 states and the District of Columbia and for nationwide injunctive relief to stop the Defendants’ alleged illegal behavior and prevent this behavior from happening in the future (see Question 14).

Purchasers or lessees of qualifying new vehicles or indirect purchasers of any of the replacement parts listed in Question 5 may be members of the Settlement Classes entitled to monetary recovery. Only those members of the Settlement Classes who, during the relevant time periods listed above, purchased or leased a vehicle or purchased a replacement part while (1) residing or (2) as to businesses, having the principal place of business located, in the District of Columbia or the states listed below will be entitled to share in the monetary recovery. Those states are: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. You may have seen a prior notice that indicated that members of the Settlement Classes may be entitled to monetary recovery if the purchase or lease transaction occurred in the District of Columbia or one of the listed states. Please note that the prior information as to the place of the purchase or lease transaction is superseded by this notice.
Looking at http://www.autopartsclass.com/included, unfortunately, it seems like I'd only have two vehicles that would qualify. I bought two more new but outside a qualifying state.

Anyone have any more info? Deadline is coming soon (June 18th).

I skimmed info at http://www.autopartsclass.com/ and looked at stuff like the FAQ and round 4 settlement docs at http://www.autopartsclass.com/courtdocs.php. I will probably be filing today or in the next day or two.

I filed last night. They seem to to prefer having the VIN of the vehicles and you need to know the approx date that you purchased (new) or leased the vehicles.

Let's hope I receive at least $100...
