L.A. Times: California lawmakers fail to act on recycling bills to phase out single-use plastics

There was never any doubt that this would take time, given the inevitable industry resistance, but we got the statewide single-use plastic produce bag ban passed some years back against similar resistance (and an initiative campaign), and individual cities are moving on straws and cups. Proponents will try again come the new legislative session. In the meantime we've got a couple of smaller bills for recycling and reducing the % of virgin plastic content allowed that did pass, and the governor will likely sign them.

A look at the overall state of the plastic problem in the U,.S. and elsewhere, on PBS tonight at 10/9 central:
The Plastic Problem: PBS Newshour Presents

With 40 percent of all plastic products used only once, plastic pollution is considered one of the largest environmental threats facing humans and animals globally. This program explores what's being done about our extensive appetite for damaging single-use plastic. Traveling from Boston to Seattle -- and reporting from the Pacific shores of Costa Rica to the rocky beaches of Easter Island -- PBS NewsHour's reporting team uncovered not only the extensive environmental damage plastic has already caused, but also innovations and solutions in plastic management.
