Bitcoin conference attendees report testing positive for Covid after returning from Miami

Not surprising given that it's Floriduh and the policies of their governor there.

While looking something up, I found https://www.who.int/en/activities/tracking-SARS-CoV-2-variants/ w/a table of all the Greek alphabet-named variants, so far. There's been a move away from country names to Greek letters.

Delta seems to be the one I hear most about in the news, but due to the capitalization, Delta Airlines always comes to my mind. I definitely didn't know the mappings of any of the ones currently under Variants of Interest. All of this has created more confusion, IMHO.

I find it ironic that New York"opened up" more or less fully on the same day that the official death toll hit 600,000. They had a live band and fireworks for that, here.

From the description:
Another pandemic will come. Here’s what we can learn from Taiwan’s efforts to fight this one
...
In December 2019, Taiwan‘s government learned that at least seven atypical pneumonia cases had been reported in Wuhan, China. Because of Taiwan’s proximity to China and the number of flights back and forth, it was expected to have the second-highest number of Covid-19 cases worldwide.

Instead, Taiwan has had one of the lowest Covid-19 death rates in the world. Thanks in part to a sophisticated digitized health care system and a mandatory two-week quarantine for all travelers, life in Taiwan went on with relative normalcy. But then, in May 2021, a new wave of cases complicated the country’s success.

So how did Taiwan, the ninth-most densely populated nation in the world, avoid a more severe spread of a highly contagious virus for so long? And what lessons can be learned from their response to the outbreak?

Thanks for the video. Taiwan is an awesome place. Our friends there are the nicest people.
Countries like Taiwan need to get vaccinated. Covid is always looking for the unvaccinated.

A man hospitalized with COVID-19 told CBS he'd still rather be sick than get a shot — and it shows how hard it'll be to convince everyone to get vaccinated
https://www.businessinsider.com/louisiana-man-hospitalized-with-covid-says-he-rather-sick-vaccinated-2021-7

A lot of people are convinced that this is a minor disease that poses limited risk. Some of these also think that the vaccines represent some brand new tech that is untested and therefore of unknown risk. So they conclude that getting sick is less risky than getting a shot. It often boils down to which alternate reality you're choosing to live in.

There really isn't any good answer to this phenomenon. In any large enough population you will see every permutation possible. Not surprising. Tragic for those who then get sick when they had the chance to avoid the disease, and especially so for those who are infected through no fault of their own by others who have chosen poorly. Troublesome too, over time, since it provides this virus with more opportunity to evolve around our defenses, which it will inevitably do if afforded enough opportunity.

It's not just a communication problem though. I see this as a human problem.

Saw that last night. We have a considerable portion of the country who are living examples of one of Forrest Gump's sayings: "Stupid is as Stupid does". As frontrangeleaf points out that's unlikely to change. I have no problem with those who decide not to get vaccinated and suffer serious consequences as a result; I'm a firm believer in the right to terminal stupidity, as long as everyone involved made that decision for themselves; maybe it's time for a Darwin Awards culling going forward. The problem, of course, is that they can get others sick and/or allow the virus to mutate so it gets even worse, affecting people who didn't volunteer to be participants in the first group's stupidity.

Exactly! Kids under 12 can't be vaccinated yet. Apparently, folks who have had transplants may develop no antibodies after being fully vaxxed. An acquaintance I know who is a FB friend of mine did have a kidney transplant and is in that boat after receiving both doses of Pfizer (IIRC). She posted about it on FB including a reputable news source on this subject. Can post that later if I haven't already.

The BI piece has a link to https://www.cbsnews.com/news/louisiana-covid-19-hospital-unit/ with more w/Mr. Roe (anti-vax guy in the hospital).

Right here in the 'land of the free and the home of brave'. What a sad state our culture is in.

They're probably just tired of arguing about it. Thirty years ago it was just the one cranky uncle at the Thanksgiving table. Now it's like half the family.

I think most republicans in today's GOP would consider Arnold a RINO, or even a true Democrat. But, Arnold is correct.

I've been looking at the current recall, and while I think the most likely result is the Newsom is not recalled, I think the second most likely result is that a democrat - maybe the Youtuber Kevin Paffrath wins. It is an odd system, where even if you vote NO on the recall, you still vote for a candidate.
