I gave my husband (Amazon King) instructions to buy an OBDII interface dongle. It came today, but I think it's the wrong thing...

I have searched the forums and cannot find more than links that take me to a generic Amazon page with a bunch of these, and I don't want to start a collection. I think I have figured out that it needs to have Bluetooth capabilities; but will it matter that I will be using iOS for LeafSpy?

I really just want someone knowledgeable to tell me which one they use and like ;-)

Thank you!

Yeah that's definitely the wrong one, no matter what platform you are using. You need one that works with a smartphone.

For iOS, you need to use one that runs off its own WiFi. Bluetooth ones will not work. This is the one I used (when I still had a Leaf):

If it's no longer in stock, search for one that says "iPhone" in the description.

For iOS LeafSpy beta version supports Bluetooth. It's much better than the wifi version.

This is the one I'm using w/iPhone 5 and LeafSpy pro beta version v1.2.7 en

You have to send a message to LeafSpy with your email address and they will send you an invitation to download the beta version. It works great. No need to switch wifi networks and the Bluetooth dongle is low current drain so you can leave it connected all the time.

Another newbie here. There are so many OBDII dongles on Amazon, I'm getting confused.

Which (several?) will work with (android) Samsung 5S. I've already downloaded the LeafSpy Pro.
Thanks in advance.

The ELM327 adapters work well, but need to be version 1.5 (the 2.1 version doesn't work). This one should work: http://smile.amazon.com/Fineed-Bluetooth-Scanner-Adapter-Diagnostic/dp/B01A6EABJE?ie=UTF8&keywords=bluetooth%20elm327&qid=1459533184&ref_=sr_1_6&sr=8-6

I don't have the link right now of the one I got but can give you one a bit later, it was off Amazon. It works good on my S3 and also my daughters S5. It was ~$12 and is nice and short, as to not bump your knee when driving. My only regret is since I leave it plugged in all the time I'm thinking I should have sprung another $5 and got one with a ON/OFF switch. Note it only only draws something like 15ma(basically nothing in the scheme of things) but I worry more about it eventually dying because of being on 24x7. The one Baustin linked looks decent too(and quite similar to the one I got) but it's not the exact one.

This is the one I have that works well with a S3 and S5 and probably lots of other phones:

This is the one with the switch, note I have no personal experience with this adapter:
