Yesterday I received an offer of a refurbished EVI ICS-200B charging station to help our fledgling EAA chapter up here in Eastern WA State. Yes, we're pretty well out on the edge of EV land here, but hope to get things started. I'm pretty sure that the offer comes from someone on this forum (and certainly a well-respected and long-time EV advocate). Although I had to cut the conversation off early, I wanted to ask several questions and learn more about it. So, I'll put them out to the experts at MNL and see what happens.

First, know that I'm not an EE or very comfortable with electricity in general, so these will be simple questions. Also, I did a quick search on MNL and found the threads listed below for reference. They provide lots of good information and it looks like these stations will work.

1) Will the refurbished station be 100% compatible with the current J1772 standard? Specifically, would there be any incompatibility for 2011, 2012, 2013 Leafs, Volts, FFE, PIP, etc. While perusing MNL I've read about various incompatibilities/problems with the GE station, PDM problems, charging or timer problems, etc. I just wanted to see what I might be up against for this charging station. We're mostly Leafs and Volts out here, although we do have three Tesla's in town, a MiEV, FFE, Smart, and Think! I would like to know in advance if there are compatibility problems so I can let others know.

2) What is the amperage of this charger and what wiring and circuit breaker size would be required?

3) Any special installation instructions or just three wires Red/Black 120 V hots, Green ground? Neutral needed or required?

4) Weather concerns? They look like exterior mounted stations, but we have some pretty tough UV and heat (up to 115 F). Should these be mounted in an enclosure or on the north side of a building.

5) Will I be able to get these installed in a commercial, exterior location without too much fuss from the code enforcers or electricians? I probably won't have any manuals, cut sheets, specs, etc. Not knowing much about this stuff, I won't have much knowledge to convince Mr. Sticksville Code that these things are just fine. Any extra help here would be appreciated. If it were just an indoor installation and not being used by the public, I wouldn't be so concerned.

6) Anything I'm missing? I'm hoping to get this installed in a location that will get daily use. I'll put it on plugshare and it will be on a major highway to Seattle so eventually there may be significant use. Since EVs are pretty new out here, I would expect most people to be non-technical and not able to trouble-shoot. If it isn't plug-n-play, it could be problematic, and I'd like to know about that in advance.

This link seems to have all the various manuals and so forth:

Some of the links seem broken, but the install and service manuals are there. Should be a solid unit for the use you have in mind.

The "Avcon" box is obviously a modern day Clipper Creek ancestor!!

Just swap on a J1772 plug with cable assembly.

From the circuit breaker, there's only three wires. Two go to the relay, and the green one goes to ground. The J1772 only has four wires, so it's not hard to connect the J1772 cable. The two bigger wires go on the other end of the relay, the green goes to ground, and the small wire goes to the pilot signal. It's usually blue, but with the ITT brand J1772 cable, it will be orange. The blue wire in the ITT brand J1772 only is not used at all.

That's it. See how I did it here.

Here is the holster that would work. Clipper Creek sells a very similar one that would likely bolt right in!

Clipper Creek has a kit to do this, but it's ridiculously overpriced. I would call them and pay the $50 for the holster, and then buy the $175 Leviton cable below:

Thanks all for the assistance and links. The links to the manuals will help if I get in a bind with the code enforcers. Also, I missed Tony's thread on my previous search. I won't be doing the work but all this info is very helpful. Tony's well-documented work makes me think I could even do it myself.
