I've bought an ELM 327 WIFI OBDII
(similar to this one https://www.amazon.com/TRADERPLUS-W...TF8&qid=1488260687&sr=1-7&keywords=obd+2+wifi )

to use it on my Nissan leaf (2015 s). I just don't know the proper way to get it to work! :(

First time I've tried it I've just plugged it into the car, without pressing the brake pedal pressed start engine twice (accessory mode) and it connected immediately to the app.

later it works immediately sometimes and sometimes I turn the car multiple times on and off tell it connected. :|

Proper sequence is to connect the OBD reader while the vehicle is off, then startup normal as you would to drive. If there are connection problems, it is usually either the OBD unit or the device used to connect to it.

I would also recommend an extension cable to minimize wear and damage to the OBD port. I would get one with a power switch to minimize drain on the 12v battery while the car is parked. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Tonsiki-Female-Diagnostic-Extension-battery/dp/B00UR5XBMW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1488281893&sr=8-2&keywords=obd+cable+switch
