Owning a 2018 Leaf in Colorado

I acquired my 2019 Leaf at the end of October and have 6 weeks of Leaf Spy readings. I don't have to make long drives and keep SOC mostly in the 20%-60% range, to minimize calendar degradation. I've driven 788 miles to date, charging only at home. The data fit closely with the theoretical...

Living the Leaf Life Below 40% SOC and pulse driving - battery protection strategy

I decided to try and answer my own question above. My knowledge of electrochemistry is rudimentary, but I found a good recent paper that I could understand about half of. It's available open access at http://jes.ecsdl.org/content/163/9/A1872 , and I consider Fig 2b the key graph, which I can't...

Living the Leaf Life Below 40% SOC and pulse driving - battery protection strategy

Hieronymous, I've followed your elegant data-rich posts with interest, and thank you for them. Right now, I'm a little confused on two counts. First, you seem to be postulating that if SOC is kept chronically below 40% the BMS algorithm considers the vehicle unsold and doesn't register any...

    E-Pedal regen braking question

I too am no longer young and need all the driving technology assistance I can get. I really like the E-pedal. I think you might be able to get more regeneration in B mode, but I've only had my 2019 Leaf less than a month and haven't fully explored its strengths and weaknesses. Where I live...

    iOS LeafSpy Pro Support

Thanks, Turbo3. I'll get an extension cable and unplug the LElink 2 when I need to. I find Leaf Spy even more useful on Leaf 2.0 because unlike with Leaf 1.0 the readings are very stable day-to-day, with a minuscule decline most days. They must have done something with the BMS to achieve this.

    Am I nuts or scared?

I'm quoting Nissan. Here's the relevant text from my 2013 owner manual: "To prevent damage to the Li-ion battery: Do not store a vehicle in temperatures below -13°F (-25°C) for over seven days. If the outside temperature is -13°F (-25°C) or less, the Li-ion battery may freeze and it cannot be...

    Am I nuts or scared?

There will inevitably have been some battery degradation, which you can estimate crudely by counting the number of bars – there should be 12. 11 indicates a loss of capacity of about 15%, 10 about 21%. For a more accurate measurement many forum members use Leaf Spy, a program written by...

    iOS LeafSpy Pro Support

Does the Leaf Spy auto-off function work with the recommended LE link 2 in a 2019 Leaf? I had no problem connecting and the program works fine, but the red LED never goes off. I contacted the seller and apparently it draws 30 mA under those conditions, so it would take a while to drain the...

Newbie - Considering new 40kwh Leaf?

I bought a 2019 Leaf a couple of weeks ago, and much as I enjoyed my 2013 Leaf, Leaf 2.0 has a lot of technology that I didn't have before, which I'm sure you've explored. I think it's a very nice car. I don't take long road trips, and 40 kWh is plenty, whereas my 2013 Leaf had degraded about...

Yikes, degradation is looking bad (2018 Leaf)

I agree completely. My 2013 Leaf is down to 85% capacity, but I have neither much need need nor the desire to drive long distances. If we have to go somewhere more than 30 miles away, we take my wife's Prius, which always reminds me that the Leaf is quite a sprightly car by comparison. So...

Yikes, degradation is looking bad (2018 Leaf)

Getting back to the title of this thread, do we really have any idea how the 2018 battery will degrade based on at most 9 months of data? It all depends on the shape of the degradation curve. It's well known that degradation is quicker with a new battery. For example, my 2013 Leaf degraded...

    2013 S - 80 or 100%?

It's the bottom button to the right of the display. For scheduled charging, you can set the charge level to 80% in the charging timer menu. For ad hoc charging, it's in the settings menu.

Leaf Price / Discount discussion thread

I'm in the same situation and agree that dealers may be more flexible on the 40 kWh 2019 Leaf, and Nissan may offer more incentives, when the 60 kWh version is about to become available.. My 2013 Leaf is giving me no trouble, and I can wait a few months.

    2019 "60 kWh" Leaf e-Plus

Yes, typo, I do indeed mean 40 kWh. The general manager at the dealership had received notification from Nissan. He was looking at a computer screen with details of the vehicles he was going to get, colors, packages, et cetera. I'm not sure if Nissan had stated they were resuming production...

    2019 "60 kWh" Leaf e-Plus

Today I was waiting at the dealership while my 2013 Leaf was being serviced, and I asked about the availability of the 2019 Leaf. The general manager told me that Nissan had assigned him six 2019 Leafs, all 40 kW, I believe. This is consistent with Nissan's previous statement that the 60 kW...

    2019 "60 kWh" Leaf e-Plus

Yes, I was tempted by the incentives to buy a 2018 Leaf, but last week the dealer told me that production had stopped (I inferred around the end of July), and I prefer not to buy a car that has been sitting on hot asphalt for a few weeks, possibly fully charged. So I've decided to wait for the...

    2019 "60 kWh" Leaf e-Plus

Thanks. Do you have any information on whether the 2019 40 kWh version will appear before the 60 kW e-Plus? Presumably it could be simultaneous but won't be later.

    2019 "60 kWh" Leaf e-Plus

I agree with you and will be surprised if the 40 kWh 2019 version has TMS. I expect it will be Leaf 2.1, the 2018 Leaf with a few minor changes/improvements at the same price or maybe a little more.

    2019 "60 kWh" Leaf e-Plus

Are you referring to the 2019 40 kWh version here? I know many forum members are interested in the e-Plus 60 kWh version, but for me 40 kWh will be enough even in winter and after years of battery degradation. That would be a big increase over my 2013 24 kWh Leaf which has degraded by about...
