No Garage, Can I Still Install a Plug In L2 Charging Station?

OP, a suggestion: If the landlord is willing to run new cable to install a regular outlet near where you park, you can actually use it as 240v while you live there, then easily convert it to a regular 120V outlet when you move out. Here's how- the wire isn't any different for a 240v/20A circuit...

L2 stopped working on 2 cars. EVSE or cars? What to do?

This is useful info, thank you. I am calculating how much juice a 2011 can get from a public 208V source versus an at-home 240v source. I know that my friend's 2011 charges slower on 208 than on 240- why might this be, if it compensating to get full power?

    NEMA 14-50 Charging

No problem! I agree that 80A is overkill. Even though EVs are going to be getting bigger batteries, they probably won't lose much efficiency, meaning that, generally, you'll be able to put as many miles into your battery in an hour in 2020 as you do today. Perhaps some non-Tesla EVs could make...

    NEMA 14-50 Charging

We know. To say the OP and others who want a high-power EVSE are "deluded" is incorrect and impolite. We're not trying to charge the vehicle faster here, we're trying to be prepared for future EVs with higher-power chargers, as your last phrase notes. It's a considerable advantage to be...

Drive Across the USA with a LEAF and Plant a Tree every 250 Miles!

Ah yes, it was a Pruck. I didn't look again at the photo before posting. I can confirm that that is his building, as well as the "Priustoric" boat/Prius in the second photo above the Pruck. Relevant is also the fact that Steve made a Leaf limo too. Not sure what the current status of it is...

Drive Across the USA with a LEAF and Plant a Tree every 250 Miles!

I saw a couple pictures of the Prius limo on his blog, so I assume that he stopped off there.

Drive Across the USA with a LEAF and Plant a Tree every 250 Miles!

I see that EVolve KY sticker! That's my local group. I was in contact with Brian when he passed through KY about a possible tree in my yard but he'd already passed my city by the time I got in touch that day. I was also a bit concerned about how was (not) outfitted- I'd think a complete...

    NEMA 14-50 Charging

I just built a NEMA 14-50 adapter for a friend to use for plugging his EVSE into for just the scenario you describe: NEMA 14-50 outlets out in the wild. There are not a lot of public charging options here in Kentucky, so having charging access at campgrounds will help him out. No one knows yet...

3 cars with stock evses on 20 amp curcuits?

The best and safest practice is to never draw the maximum current from a socket continuously. They are rated assuming that they won't be loaded that way. Continuous loads- defined as one hour or longer- shouldn't be more than 80% of the maximum. So if your coworker is plugged in drawing 12A on...

New Charging Station on the Market

Does this system just turn the EVSE on and off through its main power? Is there an enable/disable signal option on these and other that this backend system uses?

    Battery pack heat pads installation

As long as you are putting things in series, just put two of the 110v/50w units in series. Note that when a 110v charge is going on, the pads will only make 1/4 the heat, or 12.5w each. Is it right and safe? It'll be as safe as you build it. The concept is sound. Poor execution is the risk.

    Fastest Level 2 Charger?

You are correct, thanks for pointing that out. I just did a quick Google search for specification numbers. Correct again, although that's what I meant by not really communicating during charging, since it's just a steady-state square wave.

    Fastest Level 2 Charger?

Yes. The car and the L3 charger are exchanging information several times each second about the amount of current flowing into the car over a CANBUS network. J1772 is an analog circuit that doesn't communicate anything, really, after the car has started charging...

    Fastest Level 2 Charger?

Whoa there, not quite. There is a fundamental difference between L1/2 and L3. L1/2 just supply AC grid power to the car's onboard charger, and I can the difference between L1 and L2 being mostly in name. L3, though, is an entirely different animal wherein an off-board high-power charger is using...

    Fastest Level 2 Charger?

Right- the advantage of the higher-capacity EVSE would be for other, future cars that can charge faster. Certain Teslas can use all 48A right now, and I wouldn't be surprised if the recently-teased 200-mile Bolt were able to as well. A 48A EVSE would be more "futureproof". The numbers you've...

    Fastest Level 2 Charger?

The actual charger that takes power from the grid and puts it in the battery is part of the car. The device that hangs on the wall and that you plug into your car is called an EVSE(Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment), and it is just a glorified extension cord/connector to get grid power safely to...

RoadTrip Help - Phoenix to Pine Top - Can it be done?

You could always change your installation of your current EVSE to use a 14-50 plug. That'd be cheaper than a new EVSE if you can do the work yourself, if the EVSE isn't obnoxiously huge or anything. If you do want to buy another, the JuiceBox will do what you want, or the JESLA, but it's $1000...

RoadTrip Help - Phoenix to Pine Top - Can it be done?

Not impossible, but not very practical either. You will need a portable EVSE, preferably capable of 30A. Assuming your Leaf has a 6kW charger, you'll be able to recharge from empty in 4-5 hours if you can find an appropriate place to plug in your EVSE. There is a campground south of Globe and a...
