Tokyo Motor Show 2015

Sat Oct 10, 2015 6:30 pm

Anyone here on MNL going besides myself and 1 other person? (I'll let him come forward, if he wishes to do so.)

There's still time to book airplane tickets! It's Oct 29th thru Nov 8th. More info at http://www.tokyo-motorshow.com/en/. I plan to spend 2 days there. I specifically will avoid weekends as I worry it'll be too crowded (waiting to get into cars or see them). I will also avoid Nov 3rd (national holiday per http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2062.html.)

I posted about it in 2011 at viewtopic.php?f=12&t=6834&p=150935.

Just for kicks, I checked for flights on Kayak between LAX and TYO (all Tokyo area airports, there are two: HND and NRT) and it's possible to get a roundtrip ticket leaving Oct 29th, returning Nov 6th for $611, but it's on Air China and is rather long due it not taking a great route. I see non-stops for $829 and $856.

If you miss this show, you'll have to wait until 2017. Also, right now, the US $ is strong and Japanese Yen is weak. 1 USD = ~120 JPY. :D I've been there when the exchange rates were like this. I've also been there when it was crap for us Americans: 1 USD = ~80-ish Yen. :(

I'll repeat what I wrote before again:
I HIGHLY recommend the show if you're a car enthusiast and/or if you like seeing Japanese booth babes. :D That said, I wouldn't go only to Japan for a few days at TMS. There's a lot of other cool stuff to see in Japan.

More to see there than most destinations for sure. I would spend at least 2 days, preferably 4 for sightseeing. Not a cheap destination but well worth it for the experience!

Yep... actually, I'd allocate a week, at least.

Yeah, definitely not a cheap destination but not crazy expensive for hotels unless one demands high end ones (e.g. Park Hyatt). I've booked a bunch of hotel rooms so far for my trip as I'm flying from Tokyo (Haneda) to Nagasaki (to go on a "Battleship Island" tour: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e4414.html) and making my way back to Nagoya then Tokyo by train, sightseeing along the way (e.g. Beppu, Miyajima, and museums on Kobe and Nagoya).

The cheapest I've booked so far (there are cheaper) is http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review ... inawa.html for ~$63.10/night including Expedia's taxes and fees. I'm staying around there so that I can go to Beppu and Miyajima (near Hiroshima).

I got 1 room in Tokyo for an overnight at http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review ... Kanto.html for $96.85/night. I basically arrive in Tokyo and the next morning need to get on a flight from Haneda Airport to Nagasaki Airport, so I figure I'll stay near Haneda.

I booked my final room at http://www.mystays.com/e/location/kamata/ via Expedia for $381.50 in total for 4 nights.

I didn't want to stay at places that were WAY far away or hostels w/shared rooms or capsule hotels.

Darn, and here I was wanting a westerner's view of a capsule hotel. Having spent nights in snow caves, on ledges and/or in bivy sacks that provided equal or less room, a capsule might almost qualify as upscale lodging for me - they certainly have more amenities!

LOL! At least they're really cheap per night. IIRC, I found some that were ~$25 USD/night or a little less.

Actually, I'm an ABC (American Born Chinese) and have only lived in the US, on the West Coast. I've only been to China once but have been to other parts of Asia numerous times (e.g. Japan 4x before and South Korea, amongst others). But, no I've never stayed in a capsule hotel.
