Where to attach smartphone holder?

Hi-
I have one of those suction cup smartphone holders, but the dashboard covering is too bumpy for it to stick. The windshield feels too far away to attach it to.
Where/how do you attach your smartphone holders?

I use this vent mount, works pretty darn good

Bought locally, so I'm not sure it's the same one, but very similar looking. It works OK. Kinda takes two hands to get the phone into it, at least at first.
