2012 Leaf Subwoofer / Audio Outputs

Mon May 06, 2013 10:36 am

Hey folks! I have a 2012 Leaf and am also a dealer for Bazooka bass tubes. I'm probably going to put a 6" in the Leaf but I was wondering if someone could give me some guidance as to what kind of outputs the factory headunit has. I see a few people have installed subwoofers but I can't find any kind of wiring that they used for the audio signal. I'm probably dreaming but is there a RCA output on the back of the headunit? If not, where in the vehicle did you tap into the speaker lines to hijack the signal?

Thanks for any info you can provide.

I just completed a subwoofer install in my '13 this past weekend. It went very well.

Power: Easy access through the firewall behind the glove compartment. There's a tube for the rear washers through the firewall, and one inch from it is an unused 1/2" hole that's plugged with a rubber grommet. Pop it out, cut a slit, and route the heavy gauge power feed from the battery. I used 6ga to the amp located in the trunk space.

Speaker leads: I'm afraid you'll have to use speaker level inputs to the amp. For a sub, these work just fine since THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) isn't a real issue for bass input signal.
If required, get a Scoche line level converter to reduce signal to RCA Line.

I found the speaker wires colors here: viewtopic.php?f=36&t=3308

Front Left (+) Blue / Grey
Front Left (-) Violet

Front Right (+) Red / Grey
Front Right (-) Brown / Grey

Rear Left (+) Violet / Grey
Rear Left (-) Light Green / Grey

Rear Right (+) Light Green / Grey
Rear Right (-) Pink / Grey

Access to the speaker wires is also easy: pop the upright trim piece behind the front seats. Speaker wires are the only twisted pairs in the loom, colors match, and easily accessed where they enter the door segment. For remote turn on, I just used an accessory power lead from the fuse panel (Driver dash left).

So I'm at the installation phase. I have the sub mounted, and the speaker inputs are all hooked up. I'm having a heck of a time though with getting the power line from the battery through the firewall. I Popped the grommet out next to the rear washer fluid line, but I can't for the life of me get it to thread through. Do you have to remove the entire glove box assembly, or is there something I'm missing here.

Nevermind I was able to figure it out. Took the glovebox out and that made life a few million times easier. Everything is installed and working great! It's nice to have a rounded out audio experience again.

You know you want that passive Bazooka sub/radiator to go along with the powered one you already installed!!!! and it would look so symmetrical from the rear :)

Haha, I've thought about it :D I'm a Bazooka dealer but my other car is more of the "sample" vehicle for showing customers.

Wow that Bazooka tube is so small. I have one of these in my old ICE car that I was going to use:

http://www.polkaudio.com/products/db1212 but it takes up so much space.

What model is that so that I can look up the specs?

Thanks!

It's the SAS Bazooka BT6250D. Linke here:
http://www.bazooka.com/products/mobile/Amplified-Bass-Tubes-Subwoofers-C6/BT-Series-S68/BTA6250D---BT-Series-6-inch-250-watt-Class-D-Amplified-Tube-P37
Bazooka makes a lower powered model but I wouldn't suggest it. Their class D bass tubes really do a great job. I will say though that they perform much better with an aftermarket deck that has subwoofer output.

Thanks for the Link, I have a 500Watt Class D amp now in my ICE car that is paired up with the Polk Sub and it sounds pretty damn good.

I was looking at the BTA10250D which I guess is much larger?

I like the size of the Bazooka, no external amp to mount, if I really want to I can connect it to longer power and signal cables so that I can move it around if I need to carry a ladder or items where I need to fold down the seats.
