Did you notice the SOC-Meter Cluster meeting this Saturday
(6 Aug) at HTB in Santa Ana?

Gosh, we have more meetings..... ;) Forming committees is the next step down this slippery slope.

What the agenda for the meeting? If I have my SOC meter kit built by Saturday, I may show.

Do you have a camera that will take good close-up (macro) pictures?

If so, taking a series of pictures would be great:
1. Rectangular Hole - cut & fit to Display
2. Other Holes
3. Push-button - bend & wire
4. Display wiring
5. PB & Display sub-assembly
6. Power Switch wiring
7. CAN-Selector wiring
8. Zener Diode & shrink tube
9. 9-pin "D" wiring
10. Switches sub-assembly
11. Assemble to AVR-CAN board
12. Test - CAREFULLY
13. Mounting Switches in box
14. Mounting Display - 24 hour cure
15. Mounting PBs
16. Insulate between PBs & Display
17. Re-connect & install AVR-CAN board
18. Re-Test
19. Add box lid - clamps OBD cable
20. Final Test

See the Test Procedure and Normal Operation in the nearby "SOC-Meter Assembly/Test Problems" thread. If there are any Problems, please check, read, and post questions there.

Enjoy, Gary

Here are my pictures. I won't rehash Gary's instructions...they were concise. However, I will put a small description with the pictures. Don't laugh at my soldering....I'm a bit rusty and probably was never all that good to begin with! Haven't got everything into the box yet....Gary is going to trade me for a pre-cut one. And I also haven't been out to the car to test it yet....too early!

The complete kit. Naomi already got her hands on the tube of sealant:

Choose the right tip for your soldering iron. You'll be soldering on some pretty small parts:

First thing I did was solder the wires for the display:

263254_10150275834584844_704969843_7518916_7834815_n.jpg

Then I did the wires for the D-Sub connector, following the wiring chart provided. Still have to heat up the shrink wrap, but otherwise done. Almost made a pig's ear of this...managed to get a bridge of solder between pins 2 and 3 that was hard to remove:

Then I prepared the cap switches. Instructions said to fold back tabs to help avoid contact with display once mounted in project box:

Then I did the power switch:

Then the DPDT switch:

254627_10150275833949844_704969843_7518913_2511122_n.jpg

Then added the blocks for the connections to the CAN-BUSS board. NOTE: it's just been pointed out to me that my pictures show the single row wiring block on EXT2 sitting one pin over from where it's supposed to be (the one end of it is actually sitting over the blank space at the end of EXT2 instead of on the first pin). Please watch out for that, if you're using my pictures as a guide!:

And there you have it. Ready to install in the project box:

Mike,
Good pictures, Thanks.
The red wires look rather orange.

If you wish, I can double-check it with you and we can try it out tomorrow (Sat) at HTB. Please bring your camera.

There is now a "Parts List and Test Procedure" (pdf) to download at:
www.wwwsite.com/puzzles/socmeter/

But, I will bring a copy for you on Saturday.
Cheers, my friend, Gary

No need to wait....IT WORKS! Your testing instructions were, again, very concise.

However.......I'm only showing 66.5% SOC, with 187 for my raw number. But I've only used 3 bars. Or maybe I'm just coming to the end of my 4th bar, if you want to be pessimistic. That should put me higher for both those numbers. Am I running into an old bars (what I have) / new bars disparity?

Update: I decided to take the car round the block to see if I could drop down to the next bar, and I did so without even moving out the driveway. So that gave me 66.1% SOC and a raw number of 186 for the 8 remaining bars.

Edit: Or ~93% of what I would expect to be seeing.

I wonder if the other display colors (like blue) look better... I'm not really in love with that particular display...

It just doesn't photograph well. It's more of a true red than the pictures show.

Here is blue (6th & 7th pictures down):

And here is yellow (2nd picture down):

No picture exists of the green that I'm aware of.

I think what bothers me most about all of them is that the unlit segments are so obvious. I suspect it looks good at night when you can't see them but during the day, I find them distracting... Maybe it looks better in person...

Get this now - then you can "upgrade" to the bigger display I'm working on.

I just drove up to the OC today (140.3 total miles round trip) and got serial #2 from Gary. Mine has the blue display.

We sat and played with his unit, while my car charged for an hour at Wesoloh Nissan. In that hour, my car went from 52 on the display to 105 (of 281).

Hopefully, I'll put this together tomorrow. Love your pics !!

Sorry, this is OT, but so how was your return trip to SD? You left Wesoloh (SJCap) with 4-5 bars with 70 mi to return to SD? Did you top off somewhere else on the way back? What was your speed?

We're making the trip from Irvine to La Jolla (~74 mi.) this wkend with the family. Though I'm not too keen about driving down @ 60 mph, I will probably do so to be conservative the first time doing this long of a leg in the Leaf. As 'occ' once noted, several 'upgrades' during route you don't notice much in an ICE. Planning for ~6-7 hrs @ 240v at Torrey Pines before making return trip.

I would think you'd be OK even at 65mph. But the wild-card is definitely the climb in and out of San Clemente. I will be really interested to see what you have to say following your journey - our trip to Naomi's daughters is mostly identical between Garden Grove and Carlsbad (actually around 10 miles less in total), and the San Clemente elevation change, both going and returning, is my biggest concern.
