Did you notice the SOC-Meter Cluster meeting this Saturday

Gosh, we have more meetings..... ;) Forming committees is the next step down this slippery slope.

What the agenda for the meeting? If I have my SOC meter kit built by Saturday, I may show.

Do you have a camera that will take good close-up (macro) pictures?

If so, taking a series of pictures would be great:
1. Rectangular Hole - cut & fit to Display
2. Other Holes
3. Push-button - bend & wire
4. Display wiring
5. PB & Display sub-assembly
6. Power Switch wiring
7. CAN-Selector wiring
8. Zener Diode & shrink tube
9. 9-pin "D" wiring
10. Switches sub-assembly
11. Assemble to AVR-CAN board
12. Test - CAREFULLY
13. Mounting Switches in box
14. Mounting Display - 24 hour cure
15. Mounting PBs
16. Insulate between PBs & Display
17. Re-connect & install AVR-CAN board
18. Re-Test
19. Add box lid - clamps OBD cable
20. Final Test

--------------------
See the Test Procedure and Normal Operation in the nearby "SOC-Meter Assembly/Test Problems" thread. If there are any Problems, please check, read, and post questions there.

Enjoy, Gary

As a matter of fact I do! Remember my paint "crater" pictures? It's takes a couple of shots to get a useable one, but I should be able to do that without much inconvenience.

In the first post:
1. The "Parts List and Test Procedure" added to the Parts List
2. The Assembly Instructions are now almost complete.

Gary, I've trimmed the tinned ends off the unused wires in the OBD cable, to keep them from shorting, and will further tape them off with electrical tape. Any other suggestions for dealing with them?

Here are my pictures. I won't rehash Gary's instructions...they were concise. However, I will put a small description with the pictures. Don't laugh at my soldering....I'm a bit rusty and probably was never all that good to begin with! Haven't got everything into the box yet....Gary is going to trade me for a pre-cut one. And I also haven't been out to the car to test it yet....too early!

The complete kit. Naomi already got her hands on the tube of sealant:

Choose the right tip for your soldering iron. You'll be soldering on some pretty small parts:

Image

First thing I did was solder the wires for the display:

Image

Then I did the wires for the D-Sub connector, following the wiring chart provided. Still have to heat up the shrink wrap, but otherwise done. Almost made a pig's ear of this...managed to get a bridge of solder between pins 2 and 3 that was hard to remove:

Image

Then I prepared the cap switches. Instructions said to fold back tabs to help avoid contact with display once mounted in project box:

Image

Then I did the power switch:

Image

Then the DPDT switch:

Image

Then added the blocks for the connections to the CAN-BUSS board. NOTE: it's just been pointed out to me that my pictures show the single row wiring block on EXT2 sitting one pin over from where it's supposed to be (the one end of it is actually sitting over the blank space at the end of EXT2 instead of on the first pin). Please watch out for that, if you're using my pictures as a guide!:

And there you have it. Ready to install in the project box:

Some alternate shots:

Mike,
Good pictures, Thanks.
The red wires look rather orange.

If you wish, I can double-check it with you and we can try it out tomorrow (Sat) at HTB. Please bring your camera.

There is now a "Parts List and Test Procedure" (pdf) to download at:
www.wwwsite.com/puzzles/socmeter/

But, I will bring a copy for you on Saturday.
Cheers, my friend, Gary

No need to wait....IT WORKS! Your testing instructions were, again, very concise.

However.......I'm only showing 66.5% SOC, with 187 for my raw number. But I've only used 3 bars. Or maybe I'm just coming to the end of my 4th bar, if you want to be pessimistic. That should put me higher for both those numbers. Am I running into an old bars (what I have) / new bars disparity?

Update: I decided to take the car round the block to see if I could drop down to the next bar, and I did so without even moving out the driveway. So that gave me 66.1% SOC and a raw number of 186 for the 8 remaining bars.

Edit: Or ~93% of what I would expect to be seeing.

I wonder if the other display colors (like blue) look better... I'm not really in love with that particular display...
