Hello,
I don't think you can use (triacs) SS relays in an EVSE. Doesn't adhere to the J1772 standard.

Yes, This is true! Not only did they use SSR's, but they don't appear to be heatsinked enough, and a 16A (or more) load could generate enough heat to cause a problem. There will be over 50 watts of waste heat in there while charging a Leaf! Of course, since there is no Pilot, the car will not charge anyway.

Note that other than the safety issue, you will be paying for 50 watts of charging energy that your car will never see!

You'd think the dumba**es would have used a standard contactor, which is would have been cheaper also!

I would ask for a RMA and also apply for a chargeback. You can buy all those parts cheaper than what you paid, and you don't really even need the RFID stuff anyway. Chances are they won't agree to take your unit back, so begin the chargeback at the same time.

I just sent off my L1 EVSE to you for the upgrade! Don't worry though, I won't be dissecting it for my review because I already believe you provide a quality product for a great price (so I'll maintain the warranty)! :D

You can dissect it if you wish as long as you don't want the support! =)

Be warned, just as in the original EVSE, we pot the electronics to preserve reliability. So there isn't much to see unless you wish to attempt depotting. (or you have a handy X-ray machine!)

Either way, the review would be appreciated!

Does anyone have recent experience buying and using one of these stations? Some time has passed since DarkStar's review and I'd really like to know if the shipping and quality problems have been ironed out.

Back in December, someone posted to the GM-Volt forum that they were happy with their unit:
http://gm-volt.com/forum/showthread.php?5795-Alternative-240v-Charging-Dock-EV2104

But I haven't seen anything in the last six months. Thanks for the updates.

I am not sure why anyone would want a EV-Charge America EV2104. Whats the point? An upgraded EVSE from Phil works flawlessly. It's small, it works and if you want you can mount it to a wall. I am really glad this product is available. It saved me $1500.

I know all about Phil's upgrade, and have one in my garage. But it's not the subject of this thread. I'm genuinely interested if anyone has purchased the EV2104. It got a lot of interest back in December when people were scrambling to get the EVSE tax credit.

Thanks

One reason would be the LADWP rebate which requires the purchase of a UL listed L2 charger to qualify. There probably are or will be programs across the country with similar requirements. If Phil's upgrade were UL-listed I'd buy two, one upgrade for my existing and a second new upgraded unit to keep "installed" at home.

I have a EV-Charge America EV2104 which works very well. I particularly like that it plugs into my 50 amp 240 outlet (not hard wired), so if needed, I could take it with me. The outside structure is very solid. The plug is now the same one as comes with the car. I am very happy with it.

The Nissan Unit is UL listed and I doubt anyone is going to open it and say it no longer is. Secondly, I don't believe the EV2104 is UL listed, it may have some UL parts but that does NOT make it UL listed. Not to mention the other reasons to stay away from this company.

i ordered the ev 2104 unit a month ago, have repeatedly sent emails and called with no return of my calls, and have not received the unit in the mail and i do not know where to turn. i paid by check and bob rosinski said to mail him the check to the las vegas address and he would send the unit. WHAT IS GOING ON/ WHY DO THEY NOT RESPOND TO EMAILS AND WHY DO THEY NOT RETURN PHONE MESSAGES? HAVE I BEEN TOTALLY RIPPED OFF? IS THIS A FICTIONAL COMPANY??? I JUST STANDING HERE AND GOT A CANCELLED CHECK IN HAND THAT CLEARED THE BANK WEEKS AGO AND NO MERCHANDISE EVER SHIPPED TO ME? SO I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO THINK AS THEY DO NOT RETURN ANY PHONE CALLS AND DO NOT BOTHER TO RETURN ANY EMAILS.......... MAX BRADEY PLANNING TO USE IT WITH NISSAN LEAF. SO IF YOU ARE READING THIS........I WOULD SAY DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I MADE AND ORDER ONE BY MAILING IN A CHECK....... HOPEFULLY THE FOLKS AT EV CHARGE AMERICA WILL READ THIS FORUM AND GET UP WITH ME....... MAX BRADEY

Sorry to hear of your troubles Max,

There are plenty of scammers out there in this business, and after the many problematic reviews I've read of this company and it's products, I can only hope no one else will blindly send them money. If there is every ANY question about the reputation of a seller, be sure to use a credit card, as you have recourse if you are scammed.

Max, if you don't get any resolution, let us know over at EVSE Upgrade and we'll take care of you and get you a new 16 amp unit at a discount. I hate to see good people be taken advantage of which is why I came up with the upgrade in the first place.

My EV-ChargeAmerica Experience

I have just come to the realization that I too may be out over $700 for an EV-ChargeAmerica home charger that I ordered for my new Nissan Leaf. I have not been able to get any response from the company via phone or e-mail and I foolishly sent them a check even though that should have set off alarm bells. I checked on the Better Business Bureau site and it appears that now even they are unable to get a response from the company to try and resolve customer issues.

Initially, I thought I was making a good decision. I had called and left a message, then Bob Rosinski returned my call. He certainly seemed knowledgeable and he answered all my questions on the design of the unit. I guess that his demeanor along with my desperate need to obtain a level 2 charger caused me to agree readily to send a check as opposed to using a credit card. He said something about their web site not being set up for them yet. He said they had been slammed with orders and there would be a two to three week lead time to ship my unit. Well, that time has come and gone and still no charger.

I couldn’t order an upgraded Nissan Factory charger from Phil at EVSE Upgrade because he couldn’t accept orders at that time. Now that is exactly what I intend to do!

**********LET'S FIGHT BACK!**********

Hello pkitchen, DarkStar, TopCatLeaf and EdBlackmond,

I believe we are all in the same boat and have been defrauded by Mr. Robert Rosinski DBA EV-Charge America. I plan on pursuing this issue and would like to know if others would be interested in joining me in an effort to get our money back from them for their failure to deliver products we have paid for.

Since there appears to be a repeated pattern of behavior (with at least the five of us) that could be considered not just as a civil matter but if we are able to gather more information we may be able to file a criminal complaint for fraud against Robert Rosinski and EV-Charge America.

If you are interested in joining me in this effort, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Corey Ferguson

UPDATE:

I was able to get PayPal to open a fraud claim against EV-Charge America and after their investigation PayPal refunded all of the money I paid for the EVSE. I also filed claims with the Las Vegas Better Business Bureau and with http://www.IC3.gov" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. I was very fortunate to get my money back. Obviously I do not recommend anyone else consider doing business with EV-Charge America.

Contact the District Attorney for information. I know they can help with bounced checks, certainly too many on this website have been defrauded. Do it quickly.

Corey & All,
I too ordered a unit from EV-Charge America and never received it.
They don't answer calls or emails at all anymore.
Keep us posted as to what action we can take (or join) to recover our losses.
To all others - BEWARE
Protect yourself and buy from well known folks with good references.

If you have been defrauded by EVCA you should file a complaint with www.IC3.gov. IC3 works in conjunction with the FBI. If you payed by PayPal call their Customer Support number and speak to a dispute specialist or supervisor in the Protection Services Department. Good Luck
