Mazda has teamed up with ELIIY and Ube to develop 12-V Li-ion batteries to replace their lead-acid counterparts:
Green Car Congress said:
Mazda Motor Corporation, ELIIY Power Co., Ltd. and Ube Industries, Ltd. have agreed jointly to develop lithium-ion batteries for use in automobiles. The three companies will work together to develop durable, heat- and impact-resistant 12-Volt lithium-ion batteries as a viable replacement for lead-acid starter batteries in motor vehicles by 2021.
If ELIIY sounds familiar to some here, it is because they make the extremely-safe, 12,000-cycle Li-ion battery used in the Enphase AC Battery:

I see no mention of price. I've had a 12v LiFePO4 battery in my Leaf for almost 4 years now...the only barrier seems to be price.
