Looking at buying a 2011 leaf with 29k and 9 bars on a full charge.
How do I calculate how long (time and miles) I have before Nissan will no longer replace the battery under warranty?
Will every Nissan dealer do this, even if they did not sell the car?
Thx

The batteries have a 5 year / 60,000 warranty. I think this means the 2011s are no longer eligible for warranty replacement.

Note the 5 years starts from the date the Leaf was first sold, not the model year, so if the Leaf sat around for quite some time it may still be eligible(if it loses another bar) otherwise the 8 year is for failure, not degradation of the battery.

What is definition of failure?

8 capacity bars remaining.
As was mentioned, get proof of the original "sell" date as the 5yr/60k mile capacity warranty is transferable (e.g. follows the car).

Addendum: The warranty text from the booklet:
LITHIUM–ION BATTERY COVERAGE

The Lithium-Ion coverage period is 96 months or
100,000 miles, whichever comes first. This war-
ranty covers any repairs needed to correct defects
in materials or workmanship subject to the exclu-
sions listed under the heading WHAT IS NOT
COVERED. This warranty period is 96 months or
100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

2013 NEW ELECTRIC VEHICLE LIMITED WARRANTY 7
LITHIUM-ION BATTERY CAPACITY COVERAGE

In addition to the Lithium-Ion Battery Coverage for
defects in materials or workmanship, the Lithium-
Ion battery is also warranted against capacity loss
below nine bars of capacity as shown on the vehi-
cle’s battery capacity level gauge for a period of
60 months or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first.
This warranty covers any repairs needed to return
battery capacity to a level of nine remaining bars
on the vehicle’s battery capacity level gauge. If
possible, the Lithium-Ion battery components will
be repaired or replaced, and the original Lithium-
Ion battery will be returned to the vehicle. If nec-
essary, the Lithium-Ion battery will be replaced
with either a new or remanufactured Lithium-Ion
battery. Any repair or replacement made under this
Lithium-Ion Battery Capacity Coverage may not
return your Lithium-Ion battery to an “as new”
condition with all 12 battery capacity bars, but it
will provide the vehicle with a capacity level of nine
bars or more on the battery capacity level gauge.

The 8 year warranty is for manufacturing defects only - capacity loss does NOT qualify unless it is very sudden, due to the failure of one or more cells. Dropping to 8 bars over time does not qualify a pack.

It does within the 5 yr/60k mile time frame...which was the question that was asked/answered.

Sorry, but no. Read the thread again. Jjeff mentioned the 8 year warranty against failure, the OP asked what constituted "failure," and you replied incorrectly.

yep

That is why I posted the verbiage from the Nissan Warranty booklet

Thx. Guess I will pass on this sweet $6000 car.
Of note, I paid $6,000 for my 2012 Leaf SL with 24,000 miles and 10 bars (It's just on the verge of dropping to 9 bars as it is at 73% SOH) and my 5 year warranty is valid through October 2017. So, $6k is a good price, but not for a car with 8 bars and no warranty. $4500 tops in my opinion, but only if you can get value out of it if it had 6 bars.
