ABG: Amsterdam wants to ban gas and diesel cars from 2030

. . . Despite the widespread use of bicycles by many Dutch, air pollution in the Netherlands is worse than European rules permit, mainly due to heavy traffic in the cities of Amsterdam and Rotterdam.

The health ministry has warned that current levels of nitrogen dioxide and particle matter emissions can lead to respiratory illnesses, with chronic exposure shortening life expectancy by more than a year.

Amsterdam said it aims to replace all gasoline and diesel engines by emission-free alternatives, such as electric and hydrogen cars, by the end of the next decade.

It will start next year by banning diesel cars built before 2005 from the city, and will gradually expand the range of vehicles that are barred.

The city said it will use subsidies and parking permits to stimulate people to switch to cleaner cars.

Will those vehicles be able to access the park and ride lots that are scattered in the outskirts of the city along the A10 ring road? Or are those going to be off limits to ICEVs as well?

Parking in central Amsterdam is very difficult, and where it is available is often very expensive. That alone limits the numbers of vehicles in the city center.

After driving electric and hybrid vehicles there really isn't any reason to burn gasoline or diesel if you're driving in city traffic at or below 45mph, in stop and go traffic or when sitting in traffic blowing the A/C.

To be fair, if they really wanted to make a difference, they would do as London (and soon NYC) has done and charged a fee to drive ANY vehicle into the city center. The River IJ makes for one natural boundary, the other can either be the S100 Ring Road (which parallels a canal) or even the A10 Ring Road. Heck, they could have TWO levels of congestion charging, with the part inside the S100 being more expensive (since that's the most crowded part).

EV's and other zero emission technology vehicles will solve the pollution issue, but not the traffic issue.
