This is a good read

I'm talking about the battery % State of Charge readout on the black and white dash display. You cycle thru the displays via the upper left button (in the cluster of 4 buttons) to the left of the steering wheel. Please read the instruments and controls chapter of your manual (chapter 2?).
Leafs prior to model year '13 did NOT have that and only had a crappy GOM and 12 "fuel bars". Garygid discovered a value on the CAN bus that read ~281 when full and ran down as the battery depleted (http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=10301" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false
. And, folks here (he at first?) created gid meters (http://www.wwwsite.com/puzzles/socmeter/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false
, since this value was more granular than the 12 fuel bars and better than a useless GOM. People have used this as a proxy for battery %, since again, the '11 and '12 Leafs didn't have that display.
It wasn't until Leafers implored Nissan for a % SoC indicator (one forum was at a meeting @ Google in December 2011 where Kadota-san (Leaf's Chief Vehicle Engineer), Mark Perry, engineers from Japan and some Nissan execs were present) did they finally add one on the '13. They also implemented many of the suggestions from that meeting on the '13. I was at that meeting, but it was WAY before I had a Leaf. The primitive (by today's standard) gid meters existed even back then. It looked exactly like http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=4760" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
For those who are interested in more details, the raw gid value, cell voltages, temps, etc. http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=14284" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=14285" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; are probably the best right now. FWIW, I don't have this as I don't have any Bluetooth OBD2 dongle. Long story...
BTW, I'm not sure what good it is to make estimates as to how many miles show on the GOM for LBW, VLBW, etc.
The video at http://insideevs.com/real-world-test-2013-nissan-leaf-range-vs-2012-nissan-leaf-range/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; shows the behavior on a '13 S trim Leaf. Unlike the SV and SL, which have nav, there's no speech synthesized voice accompanying the warnings.
