Hello,

I have gathered that on an average, charging Leaf costs about $2.50 per 100 miles.

I believe this is using the special PG&E rate between 11pm-6am...is that correct?

Thanks!

PS: I live in CA bay area

LOL! Good luck w/that in ripoff PG&E-land.

Try http://www.pge.com/cgi-bin/pevcalculator/PEV" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. I don't run this so I don't know how accurate it is.

It's not an easy question to answer but you can get a flavor using old figures at http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=155305#p155305" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

Which PG&E plan are you on now (http://www.pge.com/tariffs/ERS.SHTML" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and http://www.pge.com/rateoptions/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)? What's your daily tier 1 baseline that you're allocated in "summer" and "winter". See http://www.pge.com/myhome/customerservice/financialassistance/medicalbaseline/understand/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. It'll also be on your bill. How much you are allocated depends on whether you have natural gas service (for water heater and furnace).

(Hint: my baselines w/nat gas service for area X (code B) are at http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=385335#p385335" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.)

Typically, what tier are you hitting now? You plan to install a second dedicated meter for EV charging only? (This is not free.)

Since you mention 50 mile commute, what % is city vs. highway? We can kinda guess how many miles per kwh you'd get from that...

I use the PG&E E-9A rate and charge my LEAF every evening starting at midnight.

For the last 3 months here is my monthly mileage and electric costs for that charging:

June: 945 miles Cost: $15.30, $0.0162/mile

July 658 miles Cost: $10.92, $0.0166/mile

August 1248 miles Cost: $18.06, $0.0145/mile

Per http://www.pge.com/myhome/environment/whatyoucando/electricdrivevehicles/rateoptions/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
E-9: This option is no longer available for customers; however, existing customers on E-9 may elect to stay on E-9 until at least the end of 2014 (exact date is dependent on actions being taken by the California Public Utilities Commission), at which point they will transition to another applicable rate schedule.
For the OP's edification, the schedule is at http://www.pge.com/tariffs/tm2/pdf/ELEC_SCHEDS_E-9.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. This still doesn't solve the problem of the costs during peak and partial peak-hours nor an EV charged at home driven considerable distances pushing people into expensive rate tiers.

http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=378936#p378936" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is an example of what happens if you're in tier 4 and supposedly can't shift to a TOU plan. At 37.75 cents/kWh, if you average let's say 3.5 miles/kWh coming out of the wall (gotta account for charging losses), that's 10.8 cents/mile or $10.80 per 100 miles.

The comment period to CPUC for PG$Es 'proposed' rate plans is open [email protected] . You may want to mention PG$Es residential rates are already double the national average.

Very roughly, the crossover between E9 and EV rape plans is in tier 3. If you are in tier 4, EV is probably cheaper.

^^^
I just looked into EVA (worst plan for me, by far) and I made some comments at http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=387878#p387878" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; about the absolutely nutty time bands.

There is an app for apple ios called "My PG&E Toolkit Lite" that provides and analysis of costs by each plan based on your historical data. I switched to E9A in June 2011 and installed PV solar in January 2013 so the app provides a comparison of different time periods and the rate schedules. For example in 2012 before I had PV the following details are provided :
Energy Used / [Generated] 9246.7 KWHr
Number of Days 366
Baseline Quantity 4282.2 KWHr
E-1 Cost/[Credit] $1961.61
E-6 Cost/[Credit] $1606.91
E-7 Cost/[Credit] $1558.38
E-9A Cost/[Credit] $1187.76
E-9B Cost/[Credit] $1409.15
EV-A Cost/[Credit] $1372.04
EV-B Cost/[Credit] $1353.39

And for 2013 with 5200 KW PV
Energy Used / [Generated] 1254.02 KWHr
Number of Days 365
Baseline Quantity 4270.50 KWHr
E-1 Cost/[Credit] $165.91
E-6 Cost/[Credit] [$234.82]
E-7 Cost/[Credit] [$400.90]
E-9A Cost/[Credit] [$281.32]
E-9B Cost/[Credit] [$250.91]
EV-A Cost/[Credit] [$373.66]
EV-B Cost/[Credit] [$364.96]

So based on these results when E9A expires I will probably be switching to E-6 or EV-A. Since I use more KWHr than I generate the credits of $200 to $400 are worth nothing. I am thinking I will go to EV-A since for every summer KWHr at $0.39 peak I can use 4.04 at $0.097 off peak in summer and the ratio becomes 2.66 in winter.

Before getting the Leaf about a month ago, I never really looked at my PG&E bill as I've always been firmly within tier 1 on the regular E1 tiered rate plan.

I've been monitoring my electricity usage pretty closely and noticed that there was an increase in Aug 1. Then I noticed today there seemed to be yet another hike a mere 2 months later!!

So I looked at historical increases and I was shocked to find they seem to raise rates every few months. http://www.pge.com/tariffs/electric.shtml#RESELEC" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; This despite having probably the highest rates in the nation already. This is outrageous.

I did recently ask to change to the E6 time of use plan, but today they told me it was activated retroactively to 9/29 and I've been charging at peak hours since I thought I was on the E1 plan. They promised they'd call me before they made the change but of course they didn't and they probably are going to make a few more bucks off of me this month.

Is there anything we can really do about PG&E? Solar's not an option as I rent.

I would check to see if the submetering can be used to increase your baseline. Part of the increase you saw in August comes from the reduction in baseline amounts by 10% which have been unchanged for more than 3 years. The price per kw changes much more often, every 3 months but the percent change is much smaller. The best thing is to move to Santa Clara City where http://siliconvalleypower.com/index.aspx?page=1806" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; provides the electricity.

Mgs333 you could also move to Alameda, west of Davis (SMUD) or slight relief in Palo Alto.
