So I registered my vehicle in Broomfield county today. It was way more expensive than I thought it would be. I guess I haven't bought a brand new car in some time. I already knew about the $50 fee for EV. My question here to everybody is why is there an EV sticker we are supposed to mount on the passengers side top right inside of the windshield? What is the purpose of this sticker? What happens if I don't put it up there? I have googled and cannot find an answer.

I understand the $50 fee, although I don't like the $20 to the grant fund so Walgreens can charge a 500% markup on electricity plus a $.30 connection fee, but that's beside the point I guess.

I don't like stickers on my car. If my car is registered then obviously I have paid all fees. Anyone else in Colorado wonder this or am I the only one?

I wondered about it as well. I never found or never searched for what would happen if I didn't put the sticker on. Honestly I rarely even see it as it is mounted up high on the pass side out of the way. My thought was it may be a way for a parking person or police officer to recognize that it is in fact an EV in the event you are occupying some specialized parking space.

Ya I suppose not everyone really knows that the leaf is all electric. I get that question all the time. So a sticker for special parking spaces would make sense. Thanks.

Waahh? I am sorry, but the $20 bucks to the grant fund is great and I wish it was a higher percentage of the fee. Whether it goes to paid or free stations at least it expands the state infrastructure. And for the record, I don't see Walgreens or many paid stations on this list:

Is the sticker a Broomfield county thing? I just registered my 2015 in Denver county and was not issued a sticker.

Nope it'sa state wide thing but they don't always give you the sticker (I think it's rare enough that they don't know or forget).

We own a LEAF and a Volt, never mounted the stickers. I've been told they only come into play with state funded chargers; ie if you use one you need to have the sticker "Or Else".

Thanks for that. I have been keeping my eye out for them and I have only seen a few EVs with them posted. So it seems that like you said most don't give them out and/or people aren't using them. I've used the chargers at DIA without problems.

I registered my Leaf today in Boulder county and was also issued this sticker. The lady told me that I had to display it or else I would "get a big ticket for using any of the chargers around here." :)

I registered my '16 SV Leaf today, also. It was about $750

It was over the phone so I won't see the sticker until next week.

What chargers is she talking about?

Sure wish there were some public DC Quick chargers along I70 and I25....

;rob

I do't think she knew what she was talking about, exactly. But as far as I can surmise it might relate to using County or State charging stations at municipal buildings?

So I just got my tags and the Colorado EV decal. I put it on for lack of a better thing to do.

I think I've found a bunch of free L2 charging stations around town and in Boulder (tho they are pretty useless to me).

I like that $30 of my $50 EV registration fee is going to Charging Infrastructure. I, however, wish they'd sprinkle a couple of DCQC stations along I70 in the mountains and up and down I25 (and CO50, 40 and 285) to expand the range of EVs. I'd even pay a couple of bucks for the electricity I use.

I just found out about the $50 EV fee. Anyone know what it is exactly for? I'm in a town (Gunnison) that I can't leave because there's no place to charge along the highways around here. It would be nice if there were charging stations in Sargents, Cimarron, Delta, Monarch, Crawford, Hotchkiss, Saguache, along Hwy 114, and in Montevista. I can probably think of another couple dozen of towns it would be nice to have even just level 2 charging stations.

The $50 fee is to recover the lost tax revenue they are not getting from gas taxes from you. A chunk of the budget comes from gas taxes. As EV drivers don't buy gas, they added another way to get your money for the roads we all use. I do agree the registration fees are out of control in Colorado. If I remember correctly, a few years ago we passed a bill to raise the rates a good bit. I.e. It is way more expensive to own a new car now then in the past in Colorado. I don't know about where you live but the roads around me all need some love, plus all the new major roads are becoming toll roads. I don't know where all this extra money is going but I feal safe in assuming we are getting screwed if multiple ways right now. How else could the budget grow by so much while they provide less and less. It simply does not add up as far as I can see unless we are overplaying for contracts now.

$30 of the $50 goes to the Highway Users Tax Fund.

$20 goes to Electric Vehicle Grant Fund, to fund chargers. I always wonder where that money goes. I'm assuming if you see a town with free municipal charging stations, that's one of them.

I was not given a sticker for my LEAF registered in Montezuma County. I have no idea what it is for but I'm not going to worry about it. Sounds like silly bureaucracy to me. If the state is trying to protect charging spaces they can just look for the EVSE cable attached to the car

Got the stupid sticker too.

Agree the fee is bogus. If it was really to substitute for gas tax, I'd at least feel like they tried.

I just got my registration completed finally. The sticker is sitting on my counter. I'd love to know where we can go charge for free that this charging infra money is going to, because I have yet to find anything. I think what that $20 goes to is the state incentive for businesses installing charging stations. They can get a pretty big incentive towards the cost of the charging stations. I do not believe it requires that in turn they offer free charging. The building I work in just did this and they charge $2/hour on the L2's. They have 4 charging ports and no one uses them because they are $2/hour and everyone already pays a ridiculous amount to park monthly. Also, I think I am the only LEAF, everyone else has Tesla's so they probably don't care.

Also, for reference, it was $875 to register my 2017 LEAF SL in Arapahoe County. Considering I paid about nothing for the car it was painful. I drive the equivalent of an economy compact car but get taxed like I am driving an Audi. :D You can itemize the tax though, so that's a bonus.

there are places,

the Cherry Creek Library in Denver has free Chargepoint charging. you pay for parking, except on Sundays when parking is free.

i parked in Winter Park (free) and charged there.
