ComEd's Hourly Pricing Program helps EV owners lower their charging costs by taking advantage of hourly electricity prices which are typically low during the overnight hours.

If you live in the Chicagoland area watch this quick video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6XC2vKfiKk on the program or check out the Hourly Pricing website https://hourlypricing.comed.com to learn more.

We have approximately 400 EV owners within the ComEd territory on the program. Here's what a few of our EV participants have to say about the program.

Love using it! My monthly power bill went down, even with the added EV. Hourly Pricing is a necessity for any EV owner!
—Eric N., Hourly Pricing participant since 2013
ComEd's Hourly Pricing has really lowered my electric vehicle fuel costs. I couldn't be happier.
—Mel S., Hourly Pricing participant since 2014
ComEd's Hourly Pricing is a great program for any EV owner!

Sounds like a great plan if you're in the Windy City. However, I keep reading the post title as "ComEdy Hour Pricing Program". Maybe I need to take a break from the Internet for today. ;)

Interesting concept, but I will take my time of use with demand charge plan over real time pricing. Real time pricing could hit customers hard if something happens on the grid to cause a large price spike (remember the games played by ENRON and others in California that manipulated wholesale prices in the 1990s).

For some reason the forum will not let me edit my post. ENRON scandal was in early 2000's not 1990's.

I thought it should be pointed out that one "detail" that isn't mentioned is that those people on the Hourly Pricing Program are also billed a "Capacity Charge" which is calculated by ComEd based on a person's peak 5 hour demand for a year and averaged with ComEd's peak 5 hour demand for a year. I saw no prices listed for what this charge might be.

Now, this may or may not apply to ComEd, but somewhere long ago I read, and I believe it was Duke Energy although I'm not sure, but the utilitie(s) would contact high energy business users and warn them that a huge peak demand time could be occurring, and they could thus reduce their usage during this critical period. What that would then do is shift costs over to residential customers, who were not warned by the utility about this critical period, and allow the utility to charge a higher residential rate. It would be interesting if someone who knows more about this can add information, as I didn't really understand how the utility company benefited from this shift.

I did this program for many years and saved quite a bit, without even adjusting my usage. I put a sample bill below so you could compare with the capacity charge, 5.27kw is high I use a lot of juice and didn't adjust usage for demand, though capacity charge multiplier was
$4.18609 so a lower demand doesn't make much of a difference if you use a lot of juice. The multiplier changes twice a year it's now like $1.50 but can vary. Below the last bill is the billing history so overall I saved a bit and could have more if I switched demand a little.

Overall I think it's a good program and to address the concerns of an earlier poster, you can switch back to the standard rate or another supplier if you so choose. You can check the pricing, current and historical, on their website and if enrolled get text messages if the price exceeds 10c or 14c. I thought it would be cool to integrate with home automation but I never did. I'm not on the program anymore because I moved outside of ComEd service territory but would continue to do the program otherwise. Overall since my participation began however many years ago I've saved over $1,000 vs the "standard" rate.
