Using equipment made by "Coulomb Technologies" they are working on installing Level 1 and Level 2 chargers in the U.S., they also have plans for a Level 3 charger, and they already seem to have an iPhone application out for finding the nearest ChargePoint. I have just recently signed up myself, they use an RFID that costs $9.95 for a keyfob or a wallet version, you can also use an RFID enabled credit card, or call a phone # on the chargepoint for 1 time use.

I installed the iPhone application, and of course you need a free account as well, but I am able to see chargepoints all across the country, in fact right now in San Franscisco, I can see there are 2 in use :)

Click on here to locate chargpoints near you (uses your IP address), most are now just Level 1 (120V outlets), but there will ber more Level 2 J-1772 in the future, as EVs are deployed that use them.

If you read their "FAQ" they say the ones that are "unreachable" are usually demo units they have setup to show how it works... Give it time, we can't even get the car until December (Western US + Tennesee), and they already have good progress, an iPhone application, and a plan, what more do we need? :)

There are three ChargePoint stations in Tucson already and I know one more will be installed soon. An owner of a chain of used bookstores, Bookmans, has been a EV advocate for a long time. He had several EV-1's that he would have people take to schools and places to demonstrate how they worked. I applied for my ChargePoint card and should get it soon.

How much does it cost to use a ChargePoint Charging Station? (back to top)

Until July 2010, access to all public ChargePoint Charging Stations continues to be free. Stations may be accessed for free by calling the toll-free number located on every charging station or by activating a ChargePass™ RFID-based Smart Card.

Starting in July 2010 owners of ChargePoint Charging stations will have the option to set a fee for accessing their stations.

Who sets the price to access ChargePoint Charging Stations? (back to top)

Starting in July 2010 the owners of ChargePoint Charging Stations (Hosts) will control the fees (if any) to access their stations. Prices will appear on the station display and on the Google maps found at Find Charging Stations.
