But you haven't been pushing 12kW thru a 2010 J1772 or TEPCO connector, have you? ;)

No, but the connector is not the issue.


No it's not - I agree! But I never said it was. ;) I expect it's going to be about comms and properly responding to the car's computer if one wants to push the electrons thru the L3 port.

Some (a few?) would enjoy the challenge of tapping the data stream from the battery box while paralleling a couple of chargers and feeding the battery box directly. :D Others, not so much.

Would be nice to charge the battery directly from photovoltaic DC, skipping the DC->AC and AC->DC losses.

Theoretically, yes! But then you would not be able to take advantage of the state and federal solar rebates or time-of-use metering, both of which require connecting the solar array to the power grid. Who knows, maybe some organizations will eventually build solar carports for their Leaf-driving employees that will directly slow-charge the cars, they could probably use the quick-charge plug which I understand is DC.

Solar parking is here. :) For L3 we still need an accepted standard and info on the data comms so we can talk to the car. Then there's the small issue of about 390V for the feed. ;)

Since one needs a DC to DC converter, output current control,
and car-to-L3 communications, for PV to Level 3 charging,
the Level 1 or 2 might be more cost-effective for PV to Leaf.

1. AV is apparently refusing to sell their L2 EVSE without installation.
2. It would seem that we might expect installs in September, but only in some areas.

I was disappointed when I learned I was excluded from getting the “free” charger through eTec due to my ZIP code (twits!). So my plan is to buy a Coulomb or some other competing Level 2 charger, mount it in a wheeled suitcase and make myself a handful of cord-end adaptors. This really shouldn’t be too hard. I also suspect more and more charger manufacturers will start approaching this Level-2 market so the prices will fall. Until then I’ll simply use the onboard Level-1 charger and plan my trips carefully. I also own a German 220 VAC lawnmower! Lighter and more powerful than domestic 120 VAC 1.44 KW versions. Cord ends are cheap!
