I am looking to get a LED headlight upgrade kit for my newly purchased 2017 Leaf SV. My question are there two separate bulbs for the high and low beams? Or is it just one bulb for both high/low beam? Any recommendation on a certain brand based off of personal experience?

Have a look at this huge thread, lots of info there...

Great that was my question! My SV doesn't have the LEDs. So I would just need one bulb for each Light fixture?

Yes, probably. I used a drop-in set of Philips X-Treme Power halogen bulbs. Slight improvement, but the high beams are half the reason why I won't buy another current generation Leaf.

North American LEAF 2016 SV uses H13 dual filament halogen (high and low beam in one bulb). Presumably this is the same for 2017.

I retrofitted Hoshi Automotive H13 LED kits in my 2016 SV with excellent results. They are self contained and basically plug and play. They are not DOT certified, however the beam pattern once properly leveled and adjusted is very clean and even with a sharp cutoff.

I use these on my 2015 SV: https://www.Amazon.com/8000LM-Bright-BridgeLux-Headlight-Conversion/dp/B01LWY4XV8/ref=s9_simh_gw_g263_i1_r?_encoding=UTF8&fpl=fresh&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=&pf_rd_r=NFHQ8NP9ZJG856KA4575&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=a6aaf593-1ba4-4f4e-bd...

They work great. The cooling fans do make more noise than the VSP.

Yes, the fan is a moving part that could fail. In addition it adds a low hum to a quiet car. Although, that is only audible with the car stopped and climate control off.

There are LED retrofit kits that do not use a fan on their heat sink (many seem to use flexible copper braid). I wonder how effective those passively cooled heat sinks are, especially in an enclosed headlight shroud.

From the pictures I've seen of the LED headlight assembly on the SL, the large heat sink is exposed to air under the hood and doesn't need a fan. Another MNL member had swapped his halogen headlights with the LED units from an SL.

I really don't like the idea of a cooling fan that can fail and burn out your headlights.. don't they make these with a heat sink instead??

I have some that use copper braid loops for the heat sink, and they work well. They look like this:

The humming noise is too noticable for me.
Has anybody tried one of those fan-less one? Does it also generates humming noise?
How can you buy the LED upgrade from the SL?
It sounds like you need to contact the dealership.

Thanks!!!

Neil, I'd really like to read more from you about these. Are the low beams as good as the OEM halogen low beams? I'll be driving my current Leaf a lot longer than I thought (I'm getting the lease extension to get a 2018) and I want to fix the terrible high beams, but not at the expense of the low beams, because I use Low 90% of the time.

@Phatcat: The one with fan that you recommend, does it hum?

This one is fan-less but it has a driver that may make it impossible for the entire kit to fit inside the dust cover.

This one is also fan-less. Unfortunately the seller does not include a photo of the entire kit.

I am considering buying one of these or another model that is also fan-less.
