Is there an easy way to send an address from my computer to my LEAF's nav? Ideally I would like to look up an address on Google Maps and send it to my LEAF.

You can set up a route on your computer using Carwings (i.e. make a route from your home to a destination), name it, and send it to the leaf. The route will be available on the car's destination list. Selecting the route in the car will set your nav destination to the route's destination, and the car will compute a new route to get you there.

I dunno, but think that would be well cool!

Yep that capability already exists in carwings on the PC as described by DeaneG. I tested it out recently and it worked fine.

Thanks. I was aware of this function but was hoping there might be something more user friendly. I perform most of my address lookups on my desktop using Google Maps and I am hopeful that one day I will be able to send the address directly from the web site to my car.

Carwings in general is sluggish - and while I haven't messed with it yet, I think you can do it straight from Google Maps. Have you noticed the Google Maps 'Send to Car' feed in Carwings from the car's dash? (and the ability to make it a favorite/auto-update so it auto-updates when the car turns on?)

I've almost got it - but am missing one piece of info:

1. Go to http://maps.google.com/
2. enter in directions (like '123 elm st, 92069 to 123 main st, 92121) and click 'Search Maps' button to the right of the search box (very important - don't think send to car shows up without this)
3. Click on the 'send' link in the header bar (right side - envelope icon)
4. Choose 'Car' in the left side, name your directions, choose Nissan, enter your Carwings ACCOUNT# (note - Carwings nickname doesn't appear to work)
5. Hit Send.

Only problem is - I can't find my Carwings Account # and a URL id I pulled when logged into Nissan's site isn't working. With that, I have a feeling this will be MUCH easier than route planner.

Anyone know where our Carwings Accout #s are?

Good find.

I do not have my Leaf yet, but when I tried my Carwings PIN (which in my case matches my login name for nissanusa.com/owners/login - unsure if that is the same for everyone), Google Maps "accepted" it (The message I got was "Message was successfully sent to car!"). I tried even just changing a single letter in Carwings PIN and Google Maps would not accept it - so I believe it is the correct information needed. Whether or not it actually "goes" is something else entirely which I hopefully will be able to test myself in a week or so.

Me too. Not fond of Carwings, and won't be upping it when the free sub expires.

Just tried with my PIN (Nissan username, not Carwings Nickname) and it seems to have gone through - we'll see what happens when I get back to my car in an hour or so... it's definitely doing error checking on the field entry so I'm feeling pretty good it'll be there...

Agree with mwalsh - not up'ing carwings when it's done unless it's $10/year or something. (betting they try to charge $30/month)

So the good news is that it *did* properly send it to the car. The auto-update setting on the Send-to-Car/Google feed also automatically picked it up and read off the addresses when the vehicle powered up. So, net - use your carwings PIN/username (not your carwings nickname) and that'll work.

But unfortunately, I couldn't find a way to get it to use it as a nav destination...so eventually, I gave up and drove home.

Reading the manual, there's a vague reference to being able to use info from certain feeds with location information and 'setting a new destination' with it, but I don't recall seeing a button available to do this. I'd try it again right now but today was 'drive normal to work in eco mode' so I've got less juice leftover than usual and a L1 charge overnight already means I won't have full juice in the morning.

..so the next test will have to wait until I commute in tomorrow.

Intriguing. Could be a path to loading up charging stations into the NAV. You could subscribe to a sightseeing feed that included locations of interesting places to visit. You could even set up a feed for a road rally where the destinations are updated during the event.

I was thinking something along the same lines...but more about sending all of the San Diego Leafs a destination of Hometown Buffet for a week from Saturday :) just have to find time to look into it and unfortunately, the tax man is knocking (and takes precedence)...

I just sent a couple address lookup through Google Maps to my CARWINGS account and Google confirms that they were successfully sent. I'll check on my commute home tonight.

This is awesome as there is no way I'm using the CARWINGS website for address lookup. Hopefully the "send to car" functionality will become available in Yelp and other services I use for address searches.

It worked!!! The final trick this morning was something that's not immediately evident. When it's 'playing' (e.g., reading) the 'feed' (in this case, the directions you sent it from google maps), you have to hit 'pause' to get a menu which then lists 'new destination' as an option. When you click it, it takes the location data (start/end point I assume) from the feed, sends it to the navi, and then auto-starts nav-mode.

Goodbye Carwings Route Planner!

I checked the user guides and could find no reference to how to do this... so I'll type up specific instructions and place them in the 'tips' thread later tonight.

Urgh! I figured as much. Nice catch though.

IMO, the LEAF's interface is WAY more complicated than it needs to be. Important stuff shouldn't be buried 4 levels down in a menu.

BTW, I just realized....best to be a bit tight-lipped about your Carwings login, since Google doesn't need a password. Not your Carwings nickname, mind you, but the actual login you entered into your car on delivery. And be a bit tight-lipped with your Owner's Portal login too, if they both happen to be the same.

I'm not saying it's anything bad, other than maybe someone with too much time on their hands sending you a bunch of locations you don't want. Though I suppose it's something that businesses spamming their own locations might eventually catch onto.

That's OK, I will. It's bad. You'd think these guys would have learned by now that if it CAN be abused it WILL be abused. As soon as I have first hand knowledge, you can bet I'll be writing Carwings a nastygram explaining that they need to keep their link to my vehicle secure.

Thank you for all your help uncovering this method as it is a vast improvement over CARWINGS. I couldn't agree with you more with regard to the LEAF's clunky interface. Voice dialing is also buried at least 4 levels down. I'm hoping both will be addressed in a future release??? How nice would it be to go to a resaurant's web site, send the address to your car and have it waiting on your nav screen with the ability to press the phone button on the steering wheel once and simply command, "Call. Restaurant."
