Leaf says "No Files" when I use iPhone via USB

I recently deleted all my music on my iPhone in order to free up space. I still want to stream podcasts however. When I plug my iPhone 5S into the Leaf USB the screen says "No Files" and it won't let me go to the iPod menu in the car radio. No audio coming through speaker when I start the podcast. It is like the radio locks up and won't play podcasts unless you have actual music on the device. Anyone else experience this and have a work around? I don't want to keep music on my device in order to use USB for podcasts.
